Feedback:Suggested Change to Campaign

Post by Elyandarin »

Hi!
I got here via TVtropes, and decided to download and test this game (version 2.2.4).
I'm now in the campaign, and so far I really like this particular flavour of strategy :)
Still, I just got what amounts to a slap in the face from this one mission,
and I thought I should give some feedback.

At the beginning of part III of the campaign (mission 23 or thereabouts),
you start out with the units you evacuated first on the previous mission.
This was very frustrating for me: I'd been told the units would be taken to
the map I cleared out in the mission before, so I expected to have that map
expand, letting me start from within a fortified base with ALL evacuated units.

(As an aside, I was severely annoyed when I found myself at the transport,
and saw it had brought BACK all units I put on that map, units I'd now have to
load in immediately and send away :annoyed: )

I was also under attack when I started the evacuation, which is why I filled
the transport with the units which were both fragile and useless for repelling an attack:
Bunker buster aircraft, and my spare commanders.

This was hardly ideal against the cyborgs that attacked me the minute I landed :(

To remedy this, I'll have to replay the ENTIRE mission before :augh:

I suggest one of the following solutions:
  • Removing the cyborgs, letting the players be alone for long enough to get reinforcements.
  • Changing the mission text so that it is clear the transported units will be the first wave in the next mission.
  • Letting the player choose the units used in the first wave - maybe an intermediate map where you can reshuffle.

That's strange. Where does it say that?

These are all good ideas, but unfortunately none of the developers mess with the campaign very much. Could you implement one these changes yourself?

The briefings for Beta 10 state that you are clearing a safe haven to evacuate to for the incoming missile, so I think this is where the confusion arose.
My assumption is that your troops were all evacuated to there, but then you move on to the gamma campaign.
I think that suggestion 1 will substantially change the flavor of gamma 1; suggestion 3 is really only useful in the circumstance that the OP is in. Players who have some sense of what to expect will simply plan to first evacuate the units they want as the first in (and will also probably have static defenses in place to hold the base while units are being evacuated). For suggestion 2, it would probably be easy to change the briefing text, although probably much harder to change the voiceover in the cutscene.

Though a short interlude map, like the last mission at Alpha base, before going to Beta base, would be nice.

Just use the same map as that beta mission map, move the LZ to the center of that plateua, have all the units spawn there, and to start gamma 1, you load your transport and send it off.

Just add some text:
Mission Regroup and Contact Gamma Base

Mission breifing:
After re-grouping at the primary Evacuation zone, prepare a Vanguard team to secure an LZ and make contact with Gamma base.

(Yes, I know your team will really want to secure the LZ, and establish a new base, because Gamma base gets pwned by Nexus, but we don't want to spoil it).

Nothing complex, just re-using an old map (you dont even have to move the LZ if you don't want to), adding a few lines of text, spawning all your units on the map, and the victory condition is launching a transport.

We got an interim level for Alpha->Beta
So why not an interim level for Beta->Gamma

It doesn't seem like it would be a lot of work, but I don't really know how to do it.

The biggest problem is to create new video for that new level, for sure it would look different than others...
It would only work if all other videos would be redone, which is a lot of work (find "actors" for voices and artists to render videos), but would be good to do at some point (mostly because very low resolution even of best quality version).
