Global difficulty setting and skirmish

Post by NoQ »

I wonder if this game options -> difficulty still affects skirmish games in v3 (decreasing your unit's damage and increasing enemy unit's damage). In any case, i don't want it to, and restrict it to campaign only.

Alternatively, i'd like it to set the default difficulty of skirmish AIs (instead of always setting them to medium by default).

Ok, that's a relief (: But anyway.

The idea rises because most of the people will like to play against NullBot on Hard, and it's not fun when you have to change it to hard all the time. Maybe we could add "default difficulty = ..." parameter into the .ai file? (but that's a completely different idea).

Personally I think that settings screen would need some redesigning in future as it is currently confusing which options applies to which game modes (except when it is explicitly settled, like for unit color).
I would like to see it as two (Campaign and Multi Player) or three tabs (I'm not sure if it is better to separate possible common settings or duplicate them or maybe move them elsewhere - language and scrolling doesn't fully fit there anyway).
Multi Player (which would include Skirmish, as it is kind of Multi Player, which sadly won't be obvious for all palyers) tab could offer to set those defaults mentioned by NoQ.

I think the game options -> difficulty should be the default difficulty for everything.

So the campaign difficulty will be set by that. And the default AI difficulty also.

Also, "Medium" sounds a bit weird to me - would it be better called "Normal"?

We need an "Extra Medium" setting.
This is why some features aren't implemented: http://forums.wz2100.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=7490&view=unread#p87241

I'd like a "Truly Unexpected" setting. Some people will expect the unexpected, but really that just leaves them open to being caught out by the truly unexpected. (and yes, I did lift that from the interview at the end of the film "Sleepover Bandits")

Blah, why there are no gender setting, I thought that was finally built in in phpBB3 and doesn't require mods anymore...

Any opinions on my proposition to rearrange settings screen (split into two sections and move away some options)?

About difficulty from campaign point of view... that setting is useless, gives no player visible changes (at least I don't see real difference between normal and hard).
It would make sense only if it would impact behavior (more or less aggressive and more or less clever) and maybe sometimes amount of enemy units (at least make enemy factories work faster) and completely drop current change in hit points or whatever depends on difficulty level there currently.
The only possible drawback (other than rewriting campaign scripts which will be needed anyway...) I can see is that more enemy units (usually) equals to bigger experience of player units and due to experience impact with proper strategy this would be kind of advantage for player, but still really harder. ;-)
So after that possible rewrite campaign would be unchanged (compared to current situation) for normal difficulty, really easier for easy and really harder for hard.
