I was reading through the artist threads and it referenced a trac ticket that shows the devs plan to start using openGL 2.1 for their development branch, trunk, which I assume is 3.0?
I was wondering if the CPU requirements will change as well?
will there be a split between the versions of the game with one supporting improved eye candy and another one with what we have now?
will those versions ever get to play together?

Yes, either that, or OpenGL 2.0; I'm not sure. This is a shame, since the Intel GMA X3100, the most popular laptop graphics card in recent history, only supports OpenGL 1.5 on Windows. Unfortunately, we seem to have no other choice.crux wrote:I was reading through the artist threads and it referenced a trac ticket that shows the devs plan to start using openGL 2.1 for their development branch, trunk, which I assume is 3.0?
The development branch, aka trunk, will be either 2.4 or 3.0; we haven't really decided yet.
No, probably not.crux wrote:I was wondering if the CPU requirements will change as well?
Yes, 2.3 will be the "what we have now" version; however, it will most likely not continue to receive new features after release.crux wrote:will there be a split between the versions of the game with one supporting improved eye candy and another one with what we have now?
No, as far as I know. Maintaining several versions is too much work for our limited development team.crux wrote:will those versions ever get to play together?

If we had more people to maintain all the rendering paths, then I guess it could be possible, but we don't, so we can't.Zarel wrote:Yes, either that, or OpenGL 2.0; I'm not sure. I am thinking we would be better off having the current trunk be 3.0, but that isn't written in stone, as Zarel said. The development branch, aka trunk, will be either 2.4 or 3.0; we haven't really decided yet.
trunk is getting more 'thread' treatment, which means, Dual Core or higher CPUs can be better used. It still will work on a single core CPU though. No, probably not.crux wrote:I was wondering if the CPU requirements will change as well?
I dunno, it really depends on what feature we are talking about. Trunk's netcode should make a appearance in the 2.x line, but I dunno when. The new terrain engine will NOT go in 2.x, since 2.x is meant for lower spec machines.Yes, 2.3 will be the "what we have now" version; however, it will most likely not continue to receive new features after release.crux wrote:will there be a split between the versions of the game with one supporting improved eye candy and another one with what we have now?
It depends on how much trunk and 2.x diverge. Right now, there are things in trunk that are not in 2.x so as it stands now, no. If those things get backported, then maybe. No, as far as I know. and it ends here.
