Yeah, 2000 euros is around 2900 USD.

Then again, 12 GB of RAM and two dedi 2GB video cards is a lot higher specced than what hawkn was talking about, and Europe's electronics are significantly more expensive than US electronics anyway. In the US, any desktop costing more than $1000 simply isn't worth its price.
I've gotten quite a bit of mileage out of secondhand HP workstations. Unless you need absolutely cutting edge CPU specs you can get an XW6400, XW8400, XW9300 or XW9400 for 3/4 of buggerall off ebay. These have PSUs with enough juice to drive high-end video cards and they will take truckloads of memory. I got some spam the other day from a dealer offering XW6400s at £400-£600 each (depending on the spec).

I do have odd reasons for getting this type of hardware (database development machines) but I think secondhand boxes like this are surprisingly good value for money if you don't mind shopping around for parts. Ebay is your friend.
