Really you don't but in actuality if you're doing it for a job then it helps convince the employers that you are both worth what they're paying you and have that reassurance that you know what you're doing.

Off the job, it doesn't matter if you have a degree or not.

i beg to differ on the job-seeking part; all a degree says to most people (well, from what i've been told repeatedly by people in the games industry) is that you've got the patience to work through something for four years (a typical degree) with little/no benefits until you finish.

which sounds a bit like any sort of engineering work really (i'm an electrical engineering student).
