In addition, if you're on a same connection (aka in a LAN), you can just join your LAN IPs and don't need to forward any ports at all.
Ok we did try this - using same wifi connection to join a game.
When I try to host a game and a friend tries to join - that friend does see the game listed and 'theoretically' does click to join but neither of us can see the other - nor can that person who is joining see their own name on the list - just 4 computer difficulty sliders (on a 2 player map).
Can you sidestep the lobby? Is there any way to do so?

Yes; join the IP. You may wish to join a LAN IP (use ipconfig to find it).
Hello Zarel thanks for answering and I really appreciate the help and advice. We are on a wireless router. The IP adresses on the two machines are 192.168.10.162 and 192.168.10.229. Is it just a matter of each player selecting the IP option and typing in the other players IP address? Thanks again.

No, one player hosts normally. The other player joins, selects the IP option, and types in the host's IP address.

Ok. When one player hosts and the other tries to join via IP (using the IP of the other player) the result is that the player does go to the game screen but the host does not see the joiner and the player joining just sees map details as if he were trying to start a skirmish except his username is not shown on the list and the AI sliders lack the actual slider bit of the bar.
Ironically we confirmed that we can 'join' a game from the same wifi network but one of us just cannot host with the other joining if we are on the same network - we'd have to be in two different locations.
We are considering trying to look for a direct network cable but since the game appears to be dependent upon Lobby I have my doubts that this will work.

Um... I blame whoever touched the multiplayer interface code. It seems to be incredibly unstable right now (hmm, time for SVN blame...)
