Recent work, finally :)

Post by yahodahan »

Hi all, finally got some time to work on a model, not much since my comp immediately gave up on life 15 minutes in (oh, the irony...)

But that's why I have a laptop! So i got about 30 min more in on this, sorry I can't seem to get much time at all, but here's a quick pic of a possible updated "HQ" building:

this is as far as the "actual" geometry will go, perhaps a little too far. Now I begin the process of building up the sexy high-poly version so I can project it down onto the low-poly, build normal maps, and pull out as much detail as I can from these few polys- always a good fight there yep yep. I won't go too crazy though, I know this needs to fit in with the rest of the game.

I envision the entire "viewing deck" (top tier) and the radar dish rotating autonomously. on the lowest level, the outermost extrusion will be steel girders/supports, while the inner is the concrete core.

So I know what I can do, does the engine do opacity maps?

Oh and it is currently 406 poly...:( grr I'm not sure where I could pull out faces, really...

thoughts welcome :) This is an early stage of course, so try to be gentle...thanks!

Oh, I see many obvious things that could be done to reduce poly count. There are lots of "detail" polygons that could probably be removed.

406 polygons for a large building like that is nothing I would worry about.

Well, at least for the level of detail I am hoping for, I believe pulling any more faces would lose significant detail. I think all the polys that are there, need to be there- though definitely parts could be simplified, if it is too "heavy". That, of course, is up to you guys who know what the engine can do :D

good to hear!

How does the design look though? Polycount can always be fixed, but bad taste destroys :) I want to keep close to the original structure, so it is still recognizable to players, but with added realism and...err..detail. haha, have I used that word enough yet? I am mainly referencing the design/look of a battleship's bridge, which is essentially a mobile HQ. this one in particular:

thanks, later!

.

- For what it's worth, I think the design is good and I like it.

- I should mention that there is a development movement underway to arm the HQ with defensive weaps. Do a BB search for developer Elio's HQ to see what I'm talking about... Which would mean the design would have to take into account weap mounts.

-- Funny you should mention a battleship bridge as essentially a mobile HQ because in 21st century RL Military Land Combat-Doctrine
a Mobile HQ IS the defacto standard thus making a fixed land HQ strictly a game trope which has been rendered totally obsolete in RL combat
for some years already... and for sure some 90 years into the future....

- Regards, whipper. :)

i already posted the link. here it is again

whippersnapper- haha, good point, I'm sure it is technically VERY obselete and VERY silly that any serious military force would have a huge, obvious, super seductive target like this sort of HQ.

But what RTS would be complete with out it?? :D

I am all about putting defensive mounts on the structure. Definitely, this should be done!

Elio- sorry, didn't check that link, but now I have :) Good stuff there, but I would like (personally) to move a bit further away from the concrete-block structure that WZ has in abundance. I think the addition of a few more "slim" details would really be a nice touch, and some detailed mapping/textures too. A good 512 can carry TONS of detail more than WZ uses currently, especially if certain parts are used multiple times on multiple sections.

Still working on this, sorry I have SO much going on I can't seem to really dig in and pull any real hours on it. ARG.

Thanks for the input guys/gals :)

if u need some texturing to do... i can help you with that.
i'm already busy making the textures to the 1024 size (creating them at 2048 and downscale them to 1024)

Nothing wrong with some 2048x2048 textures, the engine will scale them down when needed/requested.

Yeah, that's good.

I've attached a 3DS version of some wheels I like that Mabsterone made for me. I just don't know how to make them into a Warzone-compatible version.

kool sh*t seems to be going on here. Was talking to Buggy :) and Zarel earlier in IRC about maybe helping out, but i ain't got experience with any development related work, and no time to learn any of that since school starts back Monday! :mad; I'll just continue to push the Xfire support for Warzone, since I really feel it's a great and easy way of bringing players together.

I see you guys (or can i saw we? :)) got another enthusiastic contributor to the WZR project, yahodahan, i'm not 'big' around here (yet) but I still wanna welcome you!!! :D I like the idea of animations on the base structures, I suppose the engine can handle it okay. And I agree with mostly increasing the texture quality on them, a total replacement for those structures don't seem necessary, 'cause I think they're done well.

Another thing, I see whipper mention there's gonna be weapons on the HQ, i'm sure I just read in a thread here that we wouldn't go in this direction, in fear of people using the HQ as a defense, instead of a main base structure to be guarded at the back of the base (which I think is suppose to be it's actual role)

Anyway, keep up the good work guys, helping to keep WZ alive *tear*
