Help a N00b learn the ropes

Post by Cib »

Hey guys I am new so give me some slack if I am braking board edict or something please.

I just discovered WZ a few days ago, and am enjoying it quite a bit. I am interested in modding some. I am on a mac and use Blender and the Gimp. I am mostly interested in simple Graphical changes to start of with, terrain, buildings, units, etc. What do I need to know? Where do I get started, is it even posable on a mac?

Thanks in advance!

not on a mac using mac software - not right now. perhaps later if enuff people show an interest and there is a programer willing to do it in his/her free time....

i have heard that some have gotten away using a widows emulator ( forgot the name of the emulator...) not sure of the results though... perhaps working with someone using windows and wanting to do the same thing...

welcome to the forums. :)

Wow! Couldn't help but note your location. I am just out side of Calgary!

There is nothing I can do on a Mac? Wow... :(

there are a few mac users here on the forums... and i believe there is a working edition of the game but no one has yet made any efforts to work on the editor (s).

if you know of any one with some programing experience in c or c++ and they want to "tinker" with the editor source code - by all means steer em here.

and yes i am about 2 blocks south of the west ed mall transit station.

Is their no way to convert to pie on a mac? Is there no way to covert .pie files to a more conventional format?

This plug in here? http://wiki.wz2100.net/PIE_models - http://svn.gna.org/svn/warzone/trunk/tools/blender/

I don't understand the instructions. Also, does the read me not say that the Blender export plugin is currently defunct? :-S

Edit: are Vertices that same as Polygons? I see the Vert count in blender, but not a poly count.

Vertices are those little pointy things at the corners of a polygon. Each poly has at least 3 of them.

Blender refers to polygons as faces. The display shows Verts | Faces | Objects in Object mode and Verts | Edges | Faces when in Edit mode.

Ah ok, that makes more sense. I was thinking 100 verts as a bit low.

Thanks! :D Now that I know the difference between verts and polys/faces, I should be able to make things look a bit better. The Humvee like vehicle body has less than 25 faces to it!

Texturing will also make a world of difference.

Ok, so I am looking at the terrain textures. Are the these images the actual files the game refers to?

Warzone/Contents/Resources/data/texpages/tertilesc1hw.png

How does the game determine what to grab and place on a given tile? is it by pixle size or by % ? If I wanted to make lager (or smaller I suppose) rez textures, do I just need to make square tiles, and then place them 10 x 9 ?

the map editor codes what tiles are used and where.

this is the old information on tile creation - i am not sure if it is still viable - one of the coders should be able to advise on that.
