[CAM 4] Audio testing and feedback

Post by Goth Zagog-Thou »

I've begun work on the in-game voice audio. I'm not so much concerned at this point with the dialogue as much as I am with it sounding authentically military.

I've strung together several clips into something that can be listened to and critiqued. What I'm looking for is feedback on the effects used to render it.

This is not the final version, or even the person whom is speaking the lines (in this case, me) who will be voicing their talents in the final version. This is a baseline upon which to build from.

M1_Demo.ogg 2,212kb

Let me know what you guys think. :)

Good job. :) SFX, clarity, pacing, guidance and voice acting too comes across as matter of fact military. Will help a lot to complement on-screen text.

Sounds like you're reading from a script - there are some strange pauses that sound like "being distracted by reading from script" heh.

In the first part of the audio ("getting the sensor rigged up"), you don't sound as if you've just crashed landed. More like a Sunday afternoon working on a hobby in the garage.

In terms of quality, there's white noise that's particularly noticeable in between words. Maybe use a vogad and then apply crackle afterwards?

But other than that, waaaaaaaay better than I was expecting!! I'm mighty impressed overall!!

How did you get the crackle and "chh-blip" effects? Really awesome! Also, the voice sounds perfect for the game, if it's your voice you just got yourself recruited as the male computer voice :P

The clip right at the end is particularly full of AWESOME WIN! I could so make use of that on my hovercraft training video!

Oh, and please upload more audio!!

Hehe thanks.

Yes, I'm reading from the .slo during that. No, I'm not a voice actor - I'm a musician, actually. :lol2: Thus the pauses. Told you I'm a little dyslexic. And I also said (as a disclaimer) that I wouldn't necessarily be the one doing the voice acting.

Believe it or not, most of the transmission SFX you're hearing is already part of Warzone's sound library. The radio clicks? Radclick2 and 5. The static? Taken from Radclick3.ogg The background doodads are generated by the 3OSC plugin, and put through filters and simulators. Other sounds are simply open-source .ogg's gotten from freesound.org, and are GPL or CC licenced.

The end clip ("Gamma Base calling DRF-701") I like a lot also. All I did to that was increase the distortion a bit on the simulator and create an automation clip to chop up the volume so that it sounds like it's travelling a long distance.

Plenty more to come. :)

Which app are you using to compose the sounds?

As fro freesound.org, any clues as to what search you used to find decent sounds there? I spent hours and hours browsing it but could never find anything of use :s

FLStudio 10, with a bunch of extras VST's I've collected over the years. You'd be AMAZED at how many of those VST's are free.

Been a long-time owner of FL Studio, even when it was called Fruity Loops. hehe.

Freesound.org has a LOT of stuff. Just gotta have a general idea of what you're looking for, and sometimes what you *aren't* too!
