Artillery targeting problem

Post by Coincident »

Hello there.
First of all I'd like to congratulate the resurrection team for bringing this wonderful game back to life  :)

Now I've been playing a few skirmishes with 2.0.8 (latest release) under WinXP, and I've noticed that my artillery units (missiles & howitzers) always fire 1-2 tiles back from their actual target.

In particular, I've made a skirmish on highgrounds-T2, quickly occupied the higher ground, and built a few artillery units and a sensor tower.
As they started to shoot artillery rounds down-hill they almost always missed their target.
As I researched missile targeting and howitzer targeting technology, they began hitting even less. Only the 1% of rounds missed that accidentally went 1 or 2 tiles further would actually hit the enemy structures...

They seem to have no targeting problems while shooting on leveled ground though... so it might be a problem with shooting through mountains

I'm sorry for posting this here, but I didn't want to report it as a bug since I'm not sure it is one.
I'm kinda new with the game, maybe I've skipped some research or something?

PS - I'm leaving the savegame as an attachment, and a screenshot too.
2 hellstorms and 2 archangel missile turrets attacking a research facility for over 20mins...
If you want you can order my VTOLS to crush down the research facility. Then artillery will do the same thing to the next bunker around there...

PS2 - I tried turning debug mode on and manually lowered the tiles with the 'A' key. I lowered both the mountain and the research facility tiles down to zero.
Result: artillery fire 100% accurate...

Is it supposed to be like this?

It is not supposed to be like this, I think. However, since the targeting system in trunk (future 2.1) is very different, the problem is probably not present there, and it is unlikely that we will be fixing this in the 2.0 series.

I can confirm this, this is a bug and it is present in the trunk as well. Actually I thought that this bug was introduced after the overhaul of the hit system, because I wasn't aware of this bug in the original version.

in 1.10, it's a little different than coincident described -- in 1.10, it had the hit/miss dice rolling style system, but still rendered semi-randomized paths and made the artillery that was explosive (as in all artillery in the stock mod) show explosions wherever it touched the terrain.  while this isn't really related to the issue, what did happen was that when shooting towards a target behind a cliff, artillery rounds would sometimes collide with the cliff, but usually not often, and even if a round did collide with the cliff, it did not affect the chances of damaging the target (unrelated damage and render systems).

what coincident describes is that bug manifesting itself with the newer collision-detection system (or an unrelated bug that looks and acts similarly) -- since the game no longer uses hit/miss, in this case, the bug does have a substantial effect on gameplay.

u hit good if u build your arty straight to the target.
but if u build it so that your arty must fire diagonal to the target, then your arty wouldnt hit it.
