Oil!
I am curious to know, just what defines low / medium / high oil maps for you guys ?
How many wells per player is considered low / med / high, and how can we quantify this ?
(Yes, I know it depends on map size, and all that, but I am trying to come up with a easy way for map creators to tell people what density of oil they have put on the maps.)

Re: Oil!
mabye just use a system like: B4BG25
B = in each base
BG = in the rest of the battleground
pretty sure one person definition of low is someone elses high.

Re: Oil!
How do you determine what's base oil or not? Is there some radius from player starting position within which any oil is base oil and outside is not?
If so, and if we determine what is considered low/med/high oil, maybe when maps are uploaded the files can be scanned to automatically state on the map download page whether it's high/med/low and also display number of base oil vs. outside.
Are there other factors like size of map that affect definition of high/med/low?

Re: Oil!
I just told it : The amount of frontier (different paths) force the players to scout more, separate their armies/defence and ultimately suffer more damage. More units will need to be produced. Therefore the players will have less budget for their research and the gameplay will be lower oil.aubergine wrote: Are there other factors like size of map that affect definition of high/med/low?
Oh ! I believe I have another technique to find the solution :
1) Mentally Turtle yourself on the smallest position possible (yourself and the inner base)
2) Try to grow rationally. You can move your frontiers, but you try to take the least amount of new frontier on each step. Try to control oil (of course).
3) While mentally doing so, sum the amount of frontier and the amount of new oil you control.
4) If many possibilities exist, explore them one after the other.
Result :
Calculate the mean oil / frontier (opf)
A) opf < 2 = low oil. The map maker did the best he could to keep the oil as low as possible with the design he had in mind.
B) You can't make that technique correctly or guess something similar = high oil. Either you started with all the oils, or the little amount remaining was scattered without real frontier.
C) Anything else is medium oil.

Oil of base is oil that is 1-8 tiles from where your trucks start.aubergine wrote:How do you determine what's base oil or not? Is there some radius from player starting position within which any oil is base oil and outside is not?

Re: Oil!
Let C be the set of all chokepoints of a certain map. Suppose c₁, c₂ ∈ C. We say that c₁ ≤ c₂ for player X if any starting truck of player X needs to go through c₁ before it can go through c₂. It is obvious that (C, ≤) is a partially ordered set. All minimal elements of C with respect to ≤ are called base chokepoints of player X. Any oil that can be reached without going through a base chokepoint is called a base oil of player X.
Theorem. An oil is a base oil of player X iff it can be reached without going through any chokepoint c ∈ C.
We leave the proof as an easy exercise.
