Free programs for Modelers / Artists

Post by vexed »

Don't know what formats these support, or how well they work (but the screen shots look nice), but, you can get these programs for free now...and hey, you never know, perhaps someone can use these to make new models for Warzone. :3
Just passing this along...

DAZ Studio 4 Professional is a brand new version of DAZ Studio. It includes everything in DAZ Studio 4 Advanced plus the Content Creator Toolkit and a host of other plug-ins and add-ons that will empower any 3D artist to bring their work to 3D software applications, games, real-time apps, animations, high resolution art, and more.

Created for professionals, by professionals, the Content Creator Toolkit is geared toward serious Content Creators, developing complex figures and accessories. These tools will save you weeks, or even months, of development time.

Hexagon delivers all the tools a graphic artist needs to create detailed 3D models ready for final render. Packed with features such as; DAZ Studio Bridge, sculpted primitives, freehand modeling brushes, micro-displacement modeling tools, comprehensive UV-mapping modules, advanced 3D paint, and instant ambient occlusion. Hexagon provides you with all the options of expensive competitor software, but at an affordable price.

Bryce is an award winning, fun, feature-packed 3D modeling and animation package designed to allow new users to quickly create and render stunning 3D environments. Bryce combines exceptional power with an innovative interface for incredible ease of use. Add wildlife, people, props and more to your scenes via the DAZ Studio character plug-in in addition to terrain, water, sky, rocks, clouds, fog, vegetation, and architecture for which Bryce has long been the standard.

There are known issues running under Mac OSX Lion. We do not recommend using this platform for Bryce 7.

What licenses do these packages have?
Some free/educational versions of commercial packages have licenses restricting the usage of your own artwork.

Just saying: Anything you do with Blender and Gimp is your own unrestricted property forever ;)
Also, while gimp might be somewhat inferior to commercial alternatives, blender certainly is up there among the top-of-the-line packages.

Thought I might as well throw POV-Ray into the mix.

In the context of Warzone, it's much more suited to creating textures than anything else, but it's still a useful program.

Unlike Blender and Gimp, it's not GPL, but it is free, and like Blender and Gimp, your work is your own forever. :D
I fully realise my input is just another drop in the proverbial bucket. It is my goal to make each drop count.

Rargh! Vexed, why did you have to post these links to awesome free apps?! As if my spare time isn't already filled with warzone stuff, you've now got me hooked on trying to create an animated character for the female voice in the game.

Note to self: Must find way to clone myself or somehow increase number of hours in the day.

It would be awesome if there were DAZ 3D models of Warzone 2100 buildings, eg. the inside of a HQ/CC, and also droids and so on. Then we could create some pretty amazing cutscenes and cinematics...

While distributing free assets with the software might be a good selling point there's plenty of free stuff for blender too, check out http://www.blendswap.com (note that quality of models varies, though)

For sci-fi interiors, check out the BGE laboratory construction set

I haven't tried it myself, but for those who find blender too advanced, there is a free, powerful modeling-only application available called Wings3D.

As I said, I've never tried it, but many people in the blender community use it for modeling because it's fast, fairly easy and exports obj.
