It just bugged me, the Railgun/Guass Cannon thing.

A real Rail Gun is much more powerful, and way faster than a Guass Cannon.

Might be good to remind folks that in the early dev of railguns the field coils were exposed.

The one here has pretty covers over the working parts

Ok, but even the coils are wrong. The coil gun (aka guass cannon) is right, but for a rail gun they use rails, not coils (which are shown ingame):

This is a coil gun diagram, which is correct for the guass cannon only:

Here are some notes about speed:
Railguns are being researched as weapons with projectiles that do not contain explosives, but are given extremely high velocities: 3,500 m/s (11,500 ft/s, approximately Mach 10 at sea level) or more (for comparison, the M16 rifle has a muzzle speed of 930 m/s, or 3,050 ft/s), which would make their kinetic energy equal or superior to the energy yield of an explosive-filled shell of greater mass.
and:
A very large power supply, providing on the order of one million amperes of current, will create a tremendous force on the projectile, accelerating it to a speed of many kilometres per second (km/s). 20 km/s has been achieved with small projectiles explosively injected into the railgun. Although these speeds are possible, the heat generated from the propulsion of the object is enough to erode the rails rapidly. Under high-use conditions, current railguns would require frequent replacement of the rails, or to use a heat resistant material that would be conductive enough to produce the same effect.

But still what is real now was not real in the days the game was made is what im am saying sure we need a upgrade just need someone to do it.

@ camellia0x++: Would you like to do some 3D modeling for Warzone 2100? Perhaps you could submit a new railgun model if the old coilgun model bothers you. I'm sure that some of us in the community would love to see your work. :wink:

I would if I knew how to make models. Link for programs?
Also, it was more about the Guass Cannon (coil gun) being more powerful than the rail gun, when the reverse is true.

Blender is excellent and free http://www.blender.org/ If you are serious about 3d I recommend this.
Google sketchup http://sketchup.google.com/ is not nearly as useful, but it's one of the more noob-friendly packages out there.

It's true that all railguns in wz look like coilguns, but that's probably because (realistic) railguns generally don't look very cool at all :/
