Self Destruct Units??

Overwhelmed by Cyborgs? Hardpoints got you pinned down? Running low on HP, with no hope of escape or reinforcements?

Self-Destruct!

Just click a little button on the unit interface near the "Recycle" button, and your unit explodes, doing damage equal to X% of something such as the HP of the body (before upgrades) to surrounding units/structures (including your own).

Ideally, there would be a short timer on a unit's self destruct sequence, and a confirmation as well, to maintain balance of the ability, and accidental suicide respectively.

No, you don't get to keep the unit's experience (although it could become a damage modifier). Range of the blast? 1 tile for light, 2 for medium and heavy bodies. I'm not sure, but I'm trying to think "balanced and useful"over "totally f**king awesome".

If that's too much code to change in the game, then at least a Kamikaze turret (still with the timer, of course). Restrict it to vehicles only, or lessen the damage that cyborgs would deal to keep it balanced. I can see the weapon being rather powerful, as it can only be used once.

As for the VTOL's? Not happening. Kamikaze VTOL squadrons could level a base in an instant.

I remember another game featured self-destructing units, Outpost 2, I wonder if anybody here played it. In there, there were Starflare and Supernova turrets you could put on any chassis. The difference is that Starflare was useable for everyone, while only Plymouth had supernova. Starflare was a small explosion, Supernova was immense and could take out a large chunk of someone's army if done right.

I remember lots of tactics there. Sneaking a Supernova or lots of starflares with their lights off under the cover of night to destroy someone's Comand Center was a classic. Hitting enemies with EMP missiles then detonating supernovas in their massed tanks was also awesome.ynx

That said, in that game, there were EMP weaponry that were easily capable of stopping a supernova tank on its tracks. And the fastest tank body was pretty light, which meant it wans't hard to contain a supernova attack with enough firepower. You could also send supernova on a Tiger, which gave it double firepower because it had two turrets, but its slow as hell, no reason to do it really. So there was a balance there.

What could one balance self-destructing tanks with in Warzone 2100?
