2.0.7 on WinXP crashes immediately with exception

Post by superdau »

When I try to start the game, I get an exception immediatly. I have a german XP so I don't know how it's called in the english version, but the exception occurs at 0x02a590da referencing 0x00000000. It seems the commandline parameters are read, because there is a difference between "--fullscreen" and "--window". The window mode asks me, if I want to save a diagnostic file (fullscreen doesn't). But the file contains no human readable data. So I have no more information available.

Ok, I got one step further. I installed the OAL again (directly downloaded from creative). Didn't solve the crash, but no I can at least start the game with --nosound, so it seems to be a problem with the audio. I played the first missions, but without audio it's not only boring but also harder to play. What could be the problem? I'm using the nforce2 audio onboard of an ASUS A7N8X.

The diagnostic file is a minidump, which is a MS format to save informations about the exe and the conditions before the crash. Windows stores it in binary format, that's why it is not human readable.

I finally got the sound working! It seems to be a problem with the nforce drivers. Because I suspected a problem with OAL, I did a search for files like "oal" and "openal". I found OpenAL32.dll, wrap_oal.dll and nvopenal.dll. As the latter was a file by nvidia and not creative, and had a timestamp from 2003, I renamed it so it wouldn't be recognized as a dll and the sound finally works (but up to now tried for only five minutes or so)! I hope the file isn't to important for other things ;-).

i can confirm that its probably a driver issue. I have an asus A7N8 box. make sure to goto asus and get updated chipset drivers as as i believe the driver disk is out of date.
