Rip-off

Post by simon_phillips »

Hi,

I'd like your points of view about the following. I ordered an item from e-bay which was described as a genuine copy of the original warzone 2100 (I have the open source version which has no cheats and as I use warzone to vent frustration I would sometimne like to use biffer baker to beat the living wotsits out of everything !) I was quite pleased.

What arrived was a crappy cd in a crappy case containing the free, open-source version of warzone. This herbert is selling FREE software, breaching the whole ethos of open source programming.

Any ideas as to stop this person?

Generally, it is legal to sell GPL programs, as long as they also provide the source and keep the copyright info etc.

In this specific case, if the description doesn't match what you got, open a case on Ebay or just leave negative feedback.

Which scum bag did this ? Post some info / links.

As Cybersphinx said, you need to file a complaint with flea-bay, and give negative feedback.
and it ends here.

Try and get your money back. That's a bit sickening.

I am getting my money back, but it's only a few quid and not really the point. I'm old school in certain ways and selling software which is obtained for free really gets me going. Go on to ebay and look at jusy how much open source is being sold (without the copyright notices and source code) and Warzone especially. It p*sses me off.

Yes, it's a side effect of the gpl and free distribution. Anyway, if people weren't so stupid it wouldn't be a problem (I'm not calling you stupid, since you were after the original cd:s, but some people just buy stuff without knowing what it is and whether it should be free)
The only thing we can do is harass them with negative comments and spread the word.

I assure you, there is plenty of pirated software and data sold on ebay, scum is not a side effect of the GPL...

True, for most scammers it doesn't even need to be technically legal to sell the copies they're selling...
