Remaking the Campaign?

Post by DTSX »

As much as I liked the campaign in the original, I feel that is just doesn't have a strong story telling. For that reason, I've been thinking about remaking the original with a different script and a slightly altered story. What do you guys think? It's just that I can't mod or map, but I can write.

It is a good idea. Unfortunately, we need people who can mod and map to do it.

.

I would also add that it is a pre-requisite that as a yarn-spinner you have some solid familiarity with what is feasible via modding and scripting because while you may be able to write a fabulously engaging story if it is not thus informed it will only work as fan-fiction and not a campaign scenario with practical mission construct prospects.

It would be a lot easier to use existing campaign maps, otherwise, you will run into some issues.
and it ends here.

Oh I don't plan on making an entirely new campaign, but rather an expansion upon the older. Like change the story around a little. It will be the same campaign you know and love, but I want there to be a main character of some sort. I want to recreate the backstory or something like it. I don't want it to be "the Project," but the story starts off with a single man who wants his tribe (scavengers) to rebel against the paradigm. He wants to reunite the tribes and etc. Sort of inspired from native american tales.

The first scenario starts of with the first "truck". The paradigm gives the tribe (the chieftain) a tool created right before the collapse. It is a mass fabricator which only uses energy (thus the truck).

For the main character, after dozens of his fellow men are killed in wars that they know nothing of, he decides that the paradigm isn't an ally, but a curse. He steals the fabricator and thus the story unfolds.

I felt it would go from the story of the fabricator to uniting the tribes through power to finally escaping the wrath of the paradigm and creating the Union (the new name for the Project). It's like a campaign 0 backstory where the only techs will be the infantry, rockets, flamers, trucks, power gens, research centers, introduction of tanks, and the various bunkers. Nothing else will be introduced which sets up for the later scenarios where you actually do have said items.

I have one question, can you as a player control scavenger units? Like the infantry? I know no one sees the practical application of them, but it'd be interesting for a story. You have to fight against tanks with infantry and such. Also is it possible to have the infantry shoot faster and slower? Like two types of infantry (two types of MGs) where one fires very slowly compared to the other?

Yes and yes, respectively.

Though I haven't tried Flail's mod editor myself, I believe it is sufficient to do both those things.

Heck, NTW Mod lets you control scavengers.

If you read carefully the information on FlaTE's topic, you can make any kind of unit. You can make bazooka infantry, grenade infantry, even flamethrower infantry. The program is very easy to deal with once you get the hang of it. I still can't seem to get along with the weaponsounds.txt file, I think it doesn't like me very much 8)

But even myself could handle to add a all-new new weapon, with research entries and stuff, so pretty much anyone should be able to do it, probably even better than me :3

Oh... Haha, then actually, this entire thing will be very possible. It's nothing too advanced in terms of infantry, but again, this is more revolving around the backstory.

For the overall story, I plan of using voice actors (I know a few) who will be the voices for the main characters in the story. I just either need to find a person who's decently talented at drawing. I want to replace the very dated look of the whole spinning atom thing with a series of drawings that have a charcoal look to them. They will be drawn in the screen while the main character narrates the events unfolding and happening (Original War).

And now that I learned about how you can create units, I'm thinking civilians, hehehe...

I just need someone capable of editing units and parameters. I personally can't since I own a mac.

I am actually working on a mod to make existing ALPHA campaign harder. This mod uses the same maps (I am not able to understand how to replace original maps, please advise on this if anyone knows how to do it). I managed to understand how the slo and vlo files are working. Actually I am placing more units, struct and artifacts on the xisting maps using such script files and it works fine, I have to use some hack but it works.

Maybe we can cooperate on a new campaign?
