Improve Multiplayer Host Screen Options

Post by KenAlcock »

Let Host change player team

As of v2.3 beta 6, the host in multiplayer games can change other players to a different starting base (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7) and even their player color. However, the host cannot change a players team (A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H). This would be really useful. A lot of the time it is like herding cats trying to host a game and get all the players where they should be for team wars.

Let Host Change Map and Tier level While People Are joining The Game

Many times someone will be hosting a game and players will be talking about what map they want, what limits, what tier, and so on. However, the host must always drop the connection and re-host a game to choose another map or another tier. Once you have gotten a good group of people together to play, it often takes some voodoo to get them all back together, especially with some of the other issues taking place in the beta versions. This is because after all players agree which map and tier, then host exits, configures, and rehosts. But by then other people try to join and you want the same group back. Yes I know one could just use a password. However, sometimes people want to see the map preview, because it is new to them, before making a decision. It would make multiplayer life much easier if the host could switch the map without having to re-host the game.

I'm sure this is bigger than a breadbox to code, but it is really needed. Perhaps when the host enters the select map screen, all map downloads to other players are paused until the host selects which map and tier to play the game at. Once the host makes the selection, the sync code could then download maps to each player again.

Don't Store Previous Game Name in Config File When You Are Not The Host

About half the time that I'm playing multiplayer, I am the host. When I host a game, I name it with the version and the style of play players can expect, and my screen handle. So something like: "v2.3b6 3v3 MyScreenName". This information is saved to my config file between the games that I host. But if I join someone else's game, their chosen game name is saved in my config file after that game is done. So if I go back to host, I have to retype what I would normally put there. Now I know typing a name isn't so hard, but it is really easy to forget and then people think it is someone else's game, when it is actually mine. And if the previous game quit due to a tech issue, then the lobby has two games with same name and mayhem ensues for players trying to get a game going with the new host.

You already can change limits while people are joining.
But it clears chat screen.
And I think players should be able to see limits.

This would be nice.

Hey, two out of three is pretty good. :)

I figured changing the map and tier would be some work. But at least the idea is out there and developers can maybe work that in, when the related code gets updated in the future.

I was merely commenting about Zarel being able to implement two out of the three suggestions I made in my original post, which is pretty good.
