So very very very confused! :S

Ok... Just a quick question, I've been looking through the site and forums for absolutely hours trying to find the info... But i've gotten sooooooooooooooooo confused my head hurts....

All i want to know, is how do I create the in-game graphics for structures and guns and things? If I use someone else's 3D model, how do I get it flat packed into my image editing software so I can edit it, and add colours and texture and things?

Please help, All i want to do is help to create some great new graphics for this fantastic game, but i'm sooooo confused!!
