bittorrent as an alternative download
bittorrent as an alternative download
If there are enough people wanting warzone2100 then a bittorrent file could be made, as an alternative download option. It could also be used to track at average the interest in warzone 2100, as a bittorrent tracker gathers and sends information regarding the amount of people wanting the file and the amount having the whole file, and sharing it.
Re: bittorrent as an alternative download
I don't think that this is necessary.
The amount of users is quite overview-able
And the gna.org servers have still enough bandwidth, yet.

We all have the same heaven, but not the same horizon.

Its time may come yet, but at only 30mb max, its not a killer. Now if we had the rights to all the vids, etc.. then maybe a torrent would be needed

Re: bittorrent as an alternative download
* Ironic this subject would come up because the source could have started out on Bit Torrent 3 years ago but for....
* Let me explain....
* In conversations with Alex McLean after Eidos agreed to Liberate WZ but BEFORE the source was made available..
* Alex asked me - "So Rman, after we pull-out all the PSX proprietary code should we load the source to Bit Torrent ?"
* My response: "I don't think so, Alex."
* "What about your server, Rman."
* "Definitely NOT !!, Alex.... I donot want control over this at all. Look let me go to the community that has kept WZ alive for half a decade and ask them what they want to do and then I'll get back to you..."
* Which is what I did - and all the subsequent discussions are still at Rts.net.
* To make a long story short the community volunteered their resources - we concluded 3-4 different servers would do to start... Radiosity's, Cowboys, and a couple others. I passed all that info to Alex. It was just pure chance that the source was 1st uploaded to Radiosity's server and not Cowboys or any of the others... Course, after Radiosity had it, he followed thru and fed everyone elses server.
* After that - Cowboy & Kevin took on the daunting task of making the 1st compile & working .exe from the gnarly source. Cowboy was relentless and did it in hours with Kevin's asst.
* It was a wonderful culmination of a long community effort of many years....
* Anyway, at 28 mbs or thereabout....as already stated, Bit Torrent is something to consider if cut-scenes and music ever swell-up the dl to the hundreds of mb range.

Re: bittorrent as an alternative download
I don't think we _need_ BT... I allready asked Gna if they wanted to setup a tracker so they don't get short in bandwidth.
They rejected it and said that they are very far from getting short in bandwidth.
Additionaly they host Wesnoth, which is double in size and has far more user than we got. I don't think that there are any problems in bandwidth or traffic.
If someone wants to share the installers via BT, well, have a go, I don't mind, it's free.

Re: bittorrent as an alternative download
Old post... Online I've managed to find a torrent that contains CD1 and CD2 of Warzone 2100 in .iso format. It's the complete original game, you even have to download a No-CD Patch. It contains all the videos, music ect in a pure unaltered state. I usually use that to play Single Player and the Source which you guys have nicely updated to play Multi player. I can post a link to the torrent in here if anyone needs it but it should not be to hard to find online. My only complaint is of the instability encountered numerous times on the source... hmmm, but things are getting better all the time. Thanks for the great work and you bet I'll be playing the updates you release all the time.

Do with that link as you wish, but don't post it in a topic on this forum. It is against our forum guidelines.

Re: bittorrent as an alternative download
I figured it might be, thats why I didn't post it right off the bat... You guys can't advocate the downloading of copyrighted material. So who is it copyrighted by anyways? The development team or individual artists. Once they croak, then what?
