Main game graphics invisible. Ubuntu on Thinkpad T500

Post by venom087 »

Hi guys,

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) on a new Thinkpad T500 with onboard graphics (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator x4500HD with vPro). I installed Warzone 2.1.3 using the Ubuntu package manager. The loading screens and menus look fine, but as soon as I start a game I can only see the 2D graphics, all the 3D graphics are just black. It looks the same in windowed mode and fullscreen. Here is a screenshot:

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this looks like a cool game and I'd like to give it a try!

Well, I must ask if you have tried to run any other 3D games on your laptop? i have a laptop with X3100 gfx and it works by default with ubuntu 8.10 (there are drivers in it i guess), but not with 9.10 release. maybe you should try and update the drivers for gfx?

Problems with Intel graphics have gotten worse from Ubuntu 8 to Ubuntu 9. Here is one discussion from Phoronix:
Intel Linux Graphics On Ubuntu Still Flaky

One of the best things you can do for running OpenGL apps like Warzone is to turn off the evil compiz.

i have the same results on a dell inspiron with X3100 graphics card and running arch 64-bit.

the video (i'm assuming its a video) for the introduction doesn't appear either.

Code: Select all

$ warzone2100
which: no gdb in (/opt/wine/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin/perlbin/site:/usr/bin/perlbin/vendor:/usr/bin/perlbin/core)
info |09:25:45: [seq_Play] unable to open 'sequences/titles.ogg' for playback
info |09:25:45: [seq_Play] unable to open 'sequences/devastation.ogg' for playback
info |09:25:48: [rebuildSearchPath] * Failed to remove path /usr/data/ again
info |09:25:48: [rebuildSearchPath] * Failed to remove path /usr/share/warzone2100/ again
this is the CLI output i get when opening the game, trying to view the intro and trying to run a tutorial in that order.

i-NoD: No, this is the first time I've tried to use 3d graphics. I tried several things but still no dice. I grabbed the latest xorg updated from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates, updated my kernel to 2.6.30 (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30/), and tried the tweaks I found here: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/intel-graphic ... users.html.

After every change I tried running the game in windowed and fullscreen, both with and without compiz running. Nothing seemed to make any difference regarding 3d graphics, although the 2.6.30 kernel made my brightness buttons work again :D They had stopped working after updating the linux image from 2.6.28-15.49 to 2.6.28-15.51.

I really appreciate the help. Anyone have any more suggestions?

Hi venom087,
I am running Ubuntu 9.04 too (on a desktop) and i have used synaptic to install wz too. Runs flawlessly.
Even so i had issues with integrated Intel vga on windows with all types of 3D applications (not just games). But that was OS related and i fixed it using some os and drv patches.
You can look here: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-010512.htm this link is included in the first http://intellinuxgraphics.org/
hope it helps,
