Crysis Mod for Warzone 2100?

Post by mth91 »

I've seen the Mechwarrior: Living Legends mod that has been in production on the Sandbox 2 engine, and I was wondering if it would be possible to make a Warzone 2100 mod in the same fashion. Basically, remake Warzone 2100 except with the Sandbox engine, which would update the graphics significantly. I haven't played 2100 since like 1999, so I don't really know much about how the development has gone, except for the fact that Pumpkin Studios is gone. Would this idea be feasible, however?

Oh my, where to begin with this ?

Informing yourself first with this from the Project FAQ:
You should port Warzone to language XYZ (or 3D engine ABC, or make it into an MMO)!

You should realize that Warzone is a huge codebase, and porting to some other language or engine will be a enormous job (think years, if not more). We wish to improve the existing code and engine piecemeal, since we believe that is the only realistic way of going about it. We hear requests to port the game to some other language or engine very often, and it can quickly get tiring.

Of course, we could be wrong, and things could change. If you do feel that it is possible to port Warzone to a superior engine, feel free to do so yourself, with our blessing. After all, Warzone is an open-source project; you may do with it nearly whatever you wish. Before you begin, remember that Warzone is cross-platform and runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and BSD; any engine that doesn't support at least the first three OSes would be a severe regression.
Then there is the matter of conflicting licenses even if you could put a team together to do years and years worth of work to no real good end over what is already being done.

It might help if you took some time to look over the Project wiki docs and forum bb threads as to what has taken place specifically since 1999. Summarizing it all for you is, well, not an option I care to exercise as I'm feeling particularly lazy at the moment. ;)

Not to mention everyone knows Mechwarrior is an RTS :P
Current status: Sick and Learning to model in blender. Failing at both.
