Links wanted!

Post by DevUrandom »

Another approach to increase the popularity of Warzone 2100:

You got a website? It is related to gaming, strategy games or Warzone 2100 in particular?
Please link to us!

We are currently on page 3 on the (German) Google results for "Warzone 2100" and I think we can improve that!
Maybe http://warzone2100.de/ wants to post links to us in their news when they inform about a new release?
Maybe someone wants to add some information and/or links to the WikiPedia article?

We could interlink with each other. Everyone in a "Links" section, if there is no other fitting location...

Not to be the sore spot on increasing popularity, of course...

Starting to advertise this project may result in a massive influx of people.

At the moment, from what I am reading around, you guys have a truckload of new things you are working on.  Would a plethora of new people throwing out plethoras of new ideas be a good idea at this time?

Heck, just look at me.  All I've done since I've gotten here is post a few ideas, and vote for the most worthless T1 weapon.  I haven't actually done any programming on this project, I'll admit.

Don't get me wrong, if you "attract" some new developers, that would be a great boon.  But to advertise-at-will has a tendancy to attract people of a "rabid gamer" genre (whether fanboy, hater, or other know-it-all), and too many of those, especially when you already have a list of to-do's, will make life (or at least, the WZ project at hand) less... enticing to continue, if you will.

So far, just about all of the threads in these forums have been civil, and well thought out.  But a quick trip to, say, Blizzard's WoW forums is a good indicator of what a growing userbase has in store.

Of course, as this isn't a payed company, you have the advantage of telling annoying people to "GTFO" of your forums, but... lets just say I've seen my fair share of forums slaughtered by 1337's, fanboys, and the like.  I'd recommend some form of prudence on advertising.

Well, what I wanted to achieve is attrack more ppl who allready search for "Warzone 2100", but won't find it because of it's bad position in the resultlist. And as the Google algorithm works with links and associated keywords, I thought it would be a good idea if Warzone 2100 pages or related game pages in general would link to us...

I didn't want to do any advertising. No Google Ads, no banner comercials and no "Hey, come to Warzone" posts in other forums.

We announce releases on linuxgames.com, linux-gamers.net, I think freshmeat and tell the various Linux distributions about it. I wont call that advertising... ;)

Looking at http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/?g ... &mode=year, we need control of the SourceForge page. There are several thousand downloads per month, and a few new tracker entries, and a homepage with no indication that the SourceForge page is not the official project page.
We want information... information... information.

Does someone know a good hacker? ;)
Or do we have another option to get control of that page?

I'd put a 88x31 pixel image at the bottom of our site for an equal link on yours - we only get a few hundred hits a day though as the project has become semi-inactive.

I thought more of an entry in the "Links" section or similar... I am not a big fan of banner-ads. ;)

What ever, 88x31 is by no means a banner ad. It's the same size as the w3 Standard icons at the bottom of each page on our site.
