Tank/Cyborg/Building/Defense Texturing.

Post by Eminence »

I've been playing Warzone 2100, since I was about 7 years old! Well, it seems that long ago; I've recently come back to it after about 6 months of not playing it, and have found that the original (disk copy), with the v1.10 patch didnt work with XP SP3. Which is how I found this site.

Before I get to my point, I'd like to say kudos to all the guys working on this project, it's awesome!

More to the point now, and definitely more on topic:

Where would I begin with editing the base textures for all parts of the game, apart from the ground textures? I'd like to make some higher res textures with a bit more detail - similar to how the ground textures are being improved in another thread somewhere around here.

It seems like a pretty basic question, and the only details I'd need would be programs that allow me to have access to these files, possibly issues that may crop up and any specific requirements that the game force upon us.

I have a feeling that you'll be telling me that it is impossible at the moment, but I'm still curious.

Thanks in advance.

Well the most I could get to work was the Campaign - which is not what I installed it for. I mainly play Skirmish games which gave me an error every time I went to play. Sucks to be me :-S

Welcome ;)

You can start by contributing the Errors you get :P
Please go into your Warzone 2100-Folder, open up the File named stderr.txt and copy the Error-Messages into your Post right after the Game crashed. Don't start it again after it crashed, because the Error-File gets empty then. Reproduce the Problem and post the Error-Messages. Some Informations about your PC could be possibly helpful too.
I recommend the BBCode [ code ]Content of stderr.txt[ /code ] for this.

Tried Compatibility Mode yet? Set to something else than XP. At me, the Game works fine on XP SP3. Never had Problems there.

Always good to get more People, who are able to do something else but suggesting Things - like me.

Well then, I don't know if the errors are useful seeing as they're the v1.10 patched version, and not the current 2.1RC2 that works a charm apart from the small bugs; which, if I can remember, I will be reporting soon enough.

I'd still like to contribute texture wise to the game! I did read something about pieslicer and texturing, but have no clue where to start :stare: So if you know anything that could help me... it would be appreciated. You never know, if it goes well enough I may try my hand at modelling again :)

Well, textures are in the data files, and they're PNG files so you can edit them with pretty much anything. You can find the textures by renaming base.wz to base.wz.zip and extracting it, or you could do it the proper way and download the latest source, which will give you the latest textures (I'd recommend terrain branch, so you have the really latest ones).

Good luck!

I've downloaded the source and have found the textures :) Took me awhile to realise how they work, but I think I've got it now. I'll post again if I haven't.

Also, how would I get them in game to see if they work/how they look? Just thought I'd get that out the way now.

Compile source, or stick warzone2100.exe in src/, and run it. It'll use whatever textures are currently in the data/ directory.

Alternatively, replace the textures in base.wz with your own, zip it back up, rename it back to base.wz, and replace the old one with that one.

Well I tried what I believe to be the easiest solution of copy and pasting warzone2100.exe into the src/ folder. The game ran however the menu was blank. I was able to select different parts of the menu but am unable to know what exactly. I take it that this isn't supposed to happen?

I have since tried the other method of opening warzone.wz and that has worked succesfully. Now I can try something more complicated texture wise.
