Would it be possible to port Warzone2100 on wii ?

Post by gerome »

Hello,

You might be aware that the wii is platform for open source projects ( see http://wiibrew.org)

I have only recently installed Warzone2100 on linux and I think it would be interesting to port it to the wii.

If some of you are willing to help me on that, I will work on it straight ahead.

:D

I think that would be fun. :)
Though know in advance that my time is currently rather limited and more than answering questions is likely not possible.
Before you start, you should check whether SDL, OpenGL and OpenAL are available for the Wii. If they are not, that would impose a huge problem. You can likely port SDL, possibly OpenAL, but surely not OpenGL.
All of our dependencies support PowerPC, so they should not impose a problem as long as they don't have to interface with the hardware (like OpenGL and OpenAL) or are not as basic as SDL.

Does it have OpenGL? If not, that might be a tough port.

Using gl2gx will enable you to do easy porting of OpenGL application to the Wii and/or GameCube. Currently there is only an first alpha version released.
It's only an alpha version but it looks like it's made for it ...

I don't know about SDL and OpenAL, I will have a look to it.

While I don't have a WII, it would be pretty hard to control everything via that controller I would think.
Except maybe 'drivemode'. That might be pretty fun for a bit. :3

I have a Wii and it really isn't as difficult as you may think. It is just like a mouse except you literally "point and click".

i would agree with Chojun. while i've only used the wii a couple times, and have only rudimentary skills, i've seen what my friend is capable of, and so it's not a controller issue. specifically holding one button to select, another one to scroll would be awesome, with the scroll speed based on how far away from center you're pointing.

perhaps even some kind of super scroll -- you hold another button in tandem with the normal scroll button, and it brings up a full screen map (overhead like the minimap) and shows hotspots of places where you know enemies are. just point at one of these hot spots, and you are quickly scrolled to that location. this could also be weighted for participants (easier to select areas containing (your units + enemy units) -> just your units -> just enemy units -> allied units), "last seen" staleness (a hotspot you've lost sight on doesn't go away immediately, but it's selection circle gets smaller over time), etc.
