Tricky Techtree

Post by Rider »

I've always had problems in finding a proper way to navigate through the tech-tree without missing critical points, but so far I've been unsuccessful. I'm always missing a bunch of rapid-fire enhancements for the cannon,  occasionally I miss a whole bunch of sensory tech (this is most likely my fault, rather then a code error) and sometimes I get to some techtrees a lot quicker then other times.

What I'm trying to say is that the techtree in it's current form isn't exactly self-explanatory. Naturally there's a few things that speak for themselves (light cannon leads to tougher cannons, enhanced engines lead to new propulsion types, unit strength upgrades lead to new bodies etc.) but some I just don't get.

Does this mean I'll have to spend some time occasionally puzzling through the techtree as it's on the wiki just to find a proper path? Or is there a better way of doing it?

Also, anyone else that experience this in the same way?

I personally learnt to use correctly the Tech Tree by playing skirmish games. I had your same problem at the beginning, even if I had already finished the campaign.

A "tricky" yet diverse tech tree is what sets Warzone apart from 99% of the other RTS' out there.  It gives the breadth and depth that allows players to "pick their poison" and develop unique gameplay styles.

Unfortunately, the tree is so unbalanced that most people follow a pretty linear path through the end of T3.
The best thing to do when your philosophies don't stand up to debate is to lock the thread and claim victory.

The techtree itself should be more balanced, maybe including Delphinio's balancing mod. Online skirmish would be so much better, there are too many unused weapons and overpowered weapons, like Lancer.

A fair bit has changed since 2.0 (thanks to Troman). As a result of them I have had to change my T1 strategy in several places.

Yes, that's intended. This is because we are going to use "Rock, Paper, Scissors" everywhere and you used paper vs scissors so to speak.

MGs are anti-personnel weapons, hence they will rock vs cyborgs, although thing is right now MGs are pretty useless, because not many people will use cyborgs, but this should change once it will be their turn to be rebalanced.

thats right.
well, NTW Mod and T1 Balancer got much better cyborgs.
so, it can be realy useful to research and build mg there.

takign what ive heard and compairing it to my stratigys i belive i use the "advance turtle" style of playing but unlike most turtles that throw thier defences everywhere theirs room i try to build my base and defences so that it looks good and performs well as well (thanks you SWGBCC for your city build scenarios that taught me how to do that :) )

Well the best way to learn the Tech Tree is to start from T1 no base, and work your way up, the best thing in PvP games was going with Lancers, and then keeping them going till you hit Scourge, on a map like Teamwars you could get Lancers at about 8 mins, and Scourge at 35-40 mins. BUT that took lots and lots of games to know what you needed and what you didnt, trust me no one learned this Tech Tree over nite, hell most of the people I brought into RBL had to learn T1 and T3, and beable to work with others on what to go after.

To me knowing what your over all goal is at the start of the game helps, countless times I had won T1 games, just because I got to satellite up link before the other side even thought of doing so, and then I could adjust my Artty go after there main defense. This also let me know before any attack was about to happen, and from where it was comming, and if someone lacked on building upgrades, it was easy to take out there HQ with the LaserSat just before I attacked or when they were attacking. Oh and tho you can learn the Tech Tree from playing the AI, you will find it a lot better learning with others in Multiplayer games, I would also pick I high oil map to test on, then you can go back to low oil maps after you know what you need. You have 2 totaly different types of games when it comes to low oil vs high oil when doing reseach, in low oil maps you might spend more time on MG's and making units then trying to go after Lancers.

I think VTOL used to have a thing on his site that should you what you needed to research to open something up, the key thing is after you do it a few times, you will get the hang of it, oh and make sure to learn what you need for AA to open up, many of times I went up against players that stopped MG upgrades to soon and never got AA, and thats got to suck when you have a sh*t load of Bug HVC's flying around taking out your trucks and factorys in the first attack.
