RE: UI and Environment

Post by testtest1 »

hi
1
I still think we need to update the UI, especially for the multiplayer section.
As i already posted, there is no chat and the lobby is still the same as the one i saw years ago.
there a few new features you could add, like the environment settings.
2
the environment is really limited, we cant change anything, there should be a weatherbutton: rain, snow or clear / or just auto. environment with a script
i also miss this fog: http://asset3.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/ ... 257x193.pg

there will be a problem with the weather in online games, because all in this game is synced there are much lags, as we already know, but even the weathereffects will lag and they wont be shown anymore like they should. not like in 2.3.9

can anyone who watched the UI code and tried something tell me how long it would need to add some buttons and functions?
I dont know but maybe i will try myself something, as long as its not too hard with the ""99 c code""

i am pretty sure that this will give the player a new reason to stay for online games, the most are not at the IRC.

WZ did have snow / rain and the like, but, it was only for show, and didn't really do much to the gameplay. Just made things slower.
Could probably script these up though. They may even be available as cheats... don't recall if they were removed or not.

As for the UI, that is a huge can of worms. It really is difficult to get the most basic functionality with it, since, it was never meant to have more than what you see.
It just isn't very realistic to use the current UI for what people expect these days.
I still think the way to go on this is use a WZ front end written in Qt, which does have all the UI tools that you need to make a decent lobby.

chat wouldnt be the biggest problem because its already included. Your idea sounds good, hope you will try it with the qt libs, wish i could help by that but i never worked with qt.

Anyway i hope you add some javascript to the start of a level, like in the old .slo and .vlo that are not used anymore for skirmish. I tested it online with rain snow.. cant see more lags, either they have bad pc/too high settings and they lag or they can handle this lag.
It is always the same in multiplayer, if you make much units or zoom to a battle then a really strong lag appears, but only if there are more players online, so some little weather effects would not change anything.
in 2.3.9 the good thing was that really nothing lagged, as long as there were no high pingers, even battles didnt lag much as far as i remember.

But whats about this fog? http://asset3.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/ ... 57x193.jpg
Never saw this before, maybe in version 1.0

That was in the game till 2.#.# fog of war and other features were deleted from this last version.
Earlier versions all had that

The 'fog box' was made smaller IIRC, and thus, you can now see more clearly.

The options have been removed from the features available in 3.1.0 this screen shot is from 2.3.9. You can have distant mist or fog of war options.
