Control WZ with Brain Waves ?

Post by Rman Virgil »

* Shades of neural implants & Dr. Reed.....

* Not nearly as farfetched as you might think...

* The technology exits for handhelds so why not for the big kahuna PCs ?

* The company is called Neuro Sky.

You can read about their Tech accomplishments & goals HERE

* How much of this is "pie-in-the-sky" dreaming you can judge for your self.

* And if you can think of some inherent obstacles, do share your "Black Hat" thinking. (In Edward de Bono's schema there are 6-thinking hats that a complete thinker can don & utilize at will.... the easiest, commonest, & the most utilized to the point of exclusivity is the "Black Hat").

I have the software to control Warzone via sound waves (eg voice, Nuance Voice Recognition API) but my idea was shot down.  Oh well.

Seriously, though, Warzone pushed the edge of the known RTS genre back in 99 with its immersive, fully 3D environment-- the first in its class and still, 10 years later, the only in its class to feature the unique gameplay elements that it brings to bear.  It seems that the RTS genre has still struggled to catch on.  I see Warzone not so much as a game, but a set of tools and ideas which "we" can use to bring about the ultimate RTS experience.  And that experience will certainly rely on more than just the two traditional dimensions-- mouse and keyboard.

Pumpkin Studios, I believe, unwittingly orphaned their brainchild by making it so unique and alien to the RTS species.  I believe Warzone has been underappreciated, misused, and even abused ever since, especially by the company that should've seen it through to success-- Eidos.  Of course, corporate types are notoriously colorblind to all but "green" and alas Warzone wasn't as "green" as it needed to be.
The best thing to do when your philosophies don't stand up to debate is to lock the thread and claim victory.

* Voice recognition - who the heck shot it down ! ? (Though I can see legit reasons for holding off for a later release...)

* I had some serious talk with CARVER back in '99 'bout it... (Carver was one of the smartest guys i've ever met - ask 4nE, he knew him too. One of the reasons NEWST got the dev tools CD in '99 & some key info that made possible PIE Slicer & Bones0's Wdg-Explorer was 'cause Pumpkin-heads were thoroughly impressed by Carver's brains & codeing skills - also Richard Player (aka Stratadrake, master scriptor, moder, coder, artist & writer) & Sputnick (designer & implementer of Mod Switcher & A.I. personalities in Ski which was l8r deved by Troman into WZ Starter as Troman's WZCK was later picked-up & deved by Strata).... NEWST was just the 4 of us when we made the proposal to Pumpkin.... just a little history - I like giving all these peeps their due.)

* I agree 100 % on the fundamental nature of WZ - Pumpkin concieved it as an Uber RTS in the making and for us it became one hell of a game design-creation SANDBOX..

* IMHO, WZ the RTS can become the 1st A.R.T.S. (Advanced Real-Time Strategy - Coined by SLONER) & is quite capable of subsuming most all major game genres...... yes it is that rich (unlike other genres - none can subsume an RTS).

- Cheers, RV :)

* Hadn't given it any concious thought but it is interesting  how I chose to place this topic here ('cause for me, at least, it is dead-on target, heh. ;) ).

* There is a multiple-personality let loose in these spaces - kinda like WZS's choice of a.i.  personalites in SKI.

* All I can say, think, is a line from "Live Hard & Die Harder" - "Yippy-Ki-Ya !" (stream of concious, don't ask me WHY ?)

* Will it ever be warm & fuzzy ? In this incarnation, it appears unlikely.

* Then again, you first have to see the sow's ear before you can turn it into a silk purse.

* And going that far it could still come out a WalMart special - there are no assurances it will result in a Louie Vitton or Gucci.
