Perhaps, you research treads and right after you get half tracks? For realism reasons?

actually, it's a little different... iirc, most early half-track designs (in rl) did not have independently movable treads which purely tracked vehicles, like tanks, require to turn.
therefore, i think it'd be more apt to have a "tracked movement" research topic which doesn't actually give you anything in game, except to allow you to research half tracks in a short amount of time, or tracks in a longer amount of time (because for purely tracked vehicles, you need to figure out how to properly work independent transmissions, a control system for that, etc, which half-tracks are generally either just "forward" or "back", relying only on the wheels for turning).

Hmm, thats true. And come to think of it I heard the track part of most half tracks were not like metal links more like rubber like on most tank toys. =P
