My concern is we will loose some people who play this game because they dont have a super computer, or a fast one - if we upgrade.

That's a valid concern. But the code will most likely have to evolve to stay compatible with latest hardware and rendering technologies. Just like how Zarel mentionedVerin wrote:My concern is we will loose some people who play this game because they dont have a super computer, or a fast one - if we upgrade.

We haven't upgraded the system requirements significantly in a long time, and we aren't planning to. If we do add bump mapping, it'll be entirely optional - that's kind of the whole point of bump mapping - you can turn it off. If we add higher resolution textures, we can downsample. I don't see any rendering techniques we're planning on that can't just be turned off to reclaim performance. Terrain textures were the last big thing, so if you can run trunk, you should be fine for a long time.Verin wrote:My concern is we will loose some people who play this game because they dont have a super computer, or a fast one - if we upgrade.
We jumped to OpenGL, and that lost a lot of really old Windows PCs, yes. But that was a long time ago, and I doubt we'll have to do it again.

Hmm, I am not as sure as you are Zarel.Zarel wrote:We haven't upgraded the system requirements significantly in a long time, and we aren't planning to. There are many ways to do bump mapping, and one of the better (easier) routines will require openGL 2.x.
Sure, it would be nice if we had different codepaths, but that is a huge PITA with such a small team. I am not saying it couldn't be done, but I am also not saying it will be done.
The biggest issue is, we are doing everything brute force, once that issue is fixed, then, we can come back to this.
and it ends here.

Does the "better (easier) routine" also prevent you from turning it off? Because if so, that doesn't sound like a very easy routine at all.

As long as the changes you guys do are MAC compatible, ill keep playing this game. I never get tired of it, it is a lot easier on the computer than the PSone.
My PC (which is kinda old but can run the game) returns to the desktop whenever i try to load warzone, so i just use the MAC.
