Are you talking about campaign or skirmish/multiplayer? Cause the answer is completely different.

I prefer lasers myself - they can shoot at VTOLs and have good range. But it depends what you are attacking with - eg. they are not much use against walls, but they work great against cyborgs.

I don't use railguns much. Cannons are good early game, especially if you get lots of cannon cyborgs. And cannons lead to artillery (Howitzer) which comes in handy later in the game. Cannons also lead to mortars which although not that good can be useful in some situations if you can get mortar pits in the right places to weaken enemy units before your droids engage with them.

Yeah. Being extremely strong (mostly due to penetrating damage), they are fairly useless, because direct-fire weapons are pretty much deprecated at this phase. On the other hand, early needle guns and needle cyborgs can make a nice instant win if you use cannons and didn't have success with howitzers or bombs.

The main good thing about lasers is that they are easy to research. Scourges require a lot of rocket research (together with neural synapse), Rail guns require a lot of cannon research (together with neural synapse). Lasers require only fundamental research (neural synapse mk2 + sensor upgrades that, in fact, depend on them only), so they appear in multiplayer matches fairly often; they can be an instant win due to range, especially when the enemy is using project or collective bodies with low thermal armor and speed, but they are to be used with care, for AGs may still have a much better DPS when you just invented pulse.

Last but not least, lasers offer the best anti-air defense in the game, the Stormbringer.

In campaign, lasers are useless; even scourges work better, even against NEXUS cyborgs.

I tend to favour a mixture of pulse lasers and scourges, particularly on VTOLs. On the ground I favour heavy laser and seraphs for base defences, and later ripples (and sometimes archangel if the enemy starts hitting me with ripples or groundshakers).

Rail Guns give better armor with its turret, and Pulse Lasers have a very weak turret so the overall health of your tanks are lower. Back in the old days many people used to do T3 games and it was a rush to get to Pulse Lasers, but if the other side went Needles and Rails mixed in with Heavy Cannon or all Rails you would win if you knew how to play it right. Not only that but distance is a key to taking out base defense. Bunker Busters should have a longer range, but that another topic.

I would have to skip the rail gun and go with the gauss cannon! :D
