Videos and Renaming Units

Post by FreakyCheeseMan »

Just started playing recently, having a couple of issues.

First, I can't get the videos to play in game; it always takes me to a screen that says "Videos not found." I've downloaded the high-quality wz file, and placed it (extracted and unextracted), in the game's main directory and the video directory under pkg/dpkg. I read the instructions that said to put it in ~/.warzone2100-2.3.9, but that directory does not exist on my system (according to the compile page at http://developer.wz2100.net/wiki/CompileGuideLinux, it should have been created automatically when I first ran the game, but it was not.) I tried creating that folder manually and putting the video files in it, but there was no change. I'm semi-new to linux here, so I'm probably just missing something- any idea what?

Secondly, for whatever reason, I can't rename any military units- they always revert back to their default names. I can rename utility units (construction, repair and radar vehicles) just fine, but not military ones.

I'm running the game in Ubuntu 11.04; I originally installed it through the software center and experienced both problems (although for the videos, it wouldn't even show the "videos not found" screen- it just blinked black and went on with the game.) After copying the sequences.wz file into a couple of the warzone directories created in the /usr/share folder, I re-installed the game myself through the instructions on the above-linked compile page.

So... anyone have any advice?

Further developments:

On the videos side, I realized something- embedded videos (like the quick little graphics you see when looking at unit upgrades) display just fine, just not the full-screen ones.

On the unit renaming side, I found that if you make a civilian unit, name it, and then turn it into a military unit, it will keep the assigned name; if you try to make it as a military unit from the beginning, though, it will always revert back to the original name.

The unit upgrades vids are actually 3D models IIRC.

The ones that play on the intel screen ?
No, those are vids.

FreakyCheeseMan, what version you playing ? That directory changes with the version you are using... it just wants the vids in the data directory.

vexed,

That worked; moved the wz file to the data directory, movies play now. However, the sound is somewhat distorted- it cuts randomly in and out throughout the movies.

Not sure. How would I tell?

(I haven't modified any of the defaults, so it should be whatever the standard for Ubuntu is.)

No idea what is standard for that, but it seems like a configuration issue of some type. Can't really help much more though, perhaps other linux guys can help...

I recently went though all the media files in the game to see what was in them (as I'm thinking of getting my AI script to use some of them). I noticed that a lot of the .ogg files are broken - particularly the one's that don't get used much in the game.

Try dragging them in to Google Chrome web browser (which can play .ogg files as standard) and you'll see similar effects. It's like they got corrupted during conversion at some point in the past.
