Look at the docs /wiki. That will give you a better idea the power and versatility of MARY - it's like the difference between a Ford Focus and a Lamborghini. Really, that wide a gap.

I tried MARY and found that no matter what settings are chosen, it has a great deal of difficultly saying "My slippers are on fire". If it can't handle a simple phrase like that, it's not going to get very far with the craziness that I'll be throwing its way

Maybe English voices have enough good quality (Polish has terrible voice there, enough quality but really unpleasant to listen to ).

I think I may have found ideal female computer voice:

At top of page, there is a text box, enter this: commander, place- beacon-

Select "Katherine (American English)" from the drop down list and press Play.

The engine needs a bit of coaxing, but you can get things like this too: attacking- vee-tohls-

So, I'm not thinking of auto generating audio on the fly. I'm just looking for a way to get the voice that I can then convert to .ogg files. I imagine the company that makes that TTS will be happy to let me use their audio in my open source AI so long as I provide attribution to their service.

Voice changing isn't hard, those are rather simple, well known algorithms, sot there should be something available or at least fairly easy to create.
