It occured to me that the straightforward strafing run isn't completely ideal for some VTOL bodies, and particularly the oft-demanded airborne sensor platforms, so what about taking a cue from real life? The pylon turn should be recognisable to anyone who's ever played Doom as being highly reminiscent of circle-strafing, but was actually first used by AC-47 pilots in Vietnam to keep their guns pointed directly at the target for as long as their fuel and/or ammunition lasted.
Now, obviously that would be hugely imbalanced if used by light-bodied VTOLs, as over a certain speed and they'd be impossible to hit with ground-fire, and it would also be awkward for air-to-air combat. The easiest way to restrict it would be to make most VTOL weapons fire straight ahead only, the exceptions being the larger and heavier ones that would make any design slow enough to give the opposing AAA at least a fighting chance. Not sure how that would fit in with sensor platforms, but they're probably going to be ordered to circle a position anyway.
