Granted, dead fruit flies is more annoying than alive, not to mention they stink to high heaven and stars above.

Sorry to interrupt your game here, but what you see in the article you posted is a technology being in development since 2010. Still it´s far away from completion.
But it may become true in 3 to 5 years. The developers released a little information video on 01.08.2011, one year after the start of the project. You can get a lot of unsefull information by watching it:
