I think we should allow for the building of trenchs, mainly for droids, but for vehicles too.
how it would work :
1 - All units gain a "Dig In" ability.
2 - To move between normal and dug in states the unit waits a timer (while being stationary and unable to reply to commands or return fire).
3 - When the timer expires, the unit builds a trench and enters it.
4 - Droid trenchs interconnect in a similar way to how walls interconnect
5 - Dig in units gains an defensive advantage against direct fire weapons (but artillery does normal damage).
6 - droids can walk freely inside the trench, even going to trenchs built by other units nearby, but vehicles can only move turrets.
7 - To make game less turtle nature, decrease stationary artillery range (vehicles can outrange static units).
8 - Bombs (specialy fire based ones) do more damage to dig in units due to concentration of power in narrow space.

Re: Trench warfare
Hmm, I think the main objective of trenches is to protect infantry from artillery...
Could be an interesting mod, although coding it won't be very easy

Re: Trench warfare
No, he got it right. Trenches provide protection from direct fire. Artillery shells usually rain into them unhindered, as they detonate above ground these days.
In fact, I have proposed the exact same thing a while ago: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=5394&hilit=entrenchment

Re: Trench warfare
You got a point about the shells detonating above the ground...
However, it inhibits the area effect of weapons not directly hitting the trench(except for incendiary weapons which are super effective)
Hey wait, isn't this exactly what the bunker does?
