Just Starting; some tips/ answers for questions

Post by 343GuiltySpark »

Ok people, here's the deal, my brother has been obsessed with this game sinse I met him (he's my step brother), and he tried to get me into it for years, even though he hogged the computer. He really only let me play for an hour at a time, during which I crashed and burned, when he would send me away all mad that I wasn't as amazing as he was. Eventually I got tired of it and said: " You know what? Screw you, I'm playing Xbox!". Anyway, now that's he's gone(to college), I figured I could have enough time to get a feel for the game. I'm steadily getting better, but i still get my ass kicked by the computers. So, Any tips? And my first question was how do you raise your control limit? After a while of manufacturing I get this message that says "Control limit reached! Production halted!." Meanwhile, I see little armies of enemy cyborgs running around all over the place. And my other current question is which turrets are the most affective against tanks, the bots send swarms of them at me, and it's annoying. (I'll virtually slap anyone who says Tank Killers, cause I tried that, and I still got overrun) Thanks to the the people who hopefully help me, and sorry for making this so long.

Welcome to the game. :)

You can't raise your production limit. I've never encountered it except building structures, but that's different.

As you research things, the weapons / emplacements /other things become more powerful. I recommend that you keep your base small but functional, and don't be afraid to tear down old obsolete towers and things in favour of newer, shiny and more destructive things. I favour mortars, flamers and guns early on, then work into artillery and eventually lasers and railguns.

Tank killers, imho, are useless. Too slow to be effective. Fire will solve most any problem you're having with Cyborgs and Tanks, up to the NEXUS bodies and then it's whatever you can throw at them en masse.

Good luck! Tell us how it works out. :D

Tank killers ;)

Well, "AT" lancer/TK/scourge branch is good against tanks, but it requires some wisdom to use. They must hit-and-run to compensate the slow reload time, so they need a fast propulsion. Lancer/scourge borgs are very effective against AI tanks (they retreat to repair easily without getting stuck and they're resistant against AT/AR weapons bots tend to overuse).

"Control limits" are 15 for trucks/engineers (together) and 150 for the total number of units; you're probably hitting the first of these limits.

Can't add much to what's been said above, except perhaps this:

1. Keep your own play tight, esp in the early stages, don't try to take the fight to the AI (it'll runs through a million decisions while you are reaching to press a key).

2. Balance hard and weapon defences by updating concrete and ammo in tandem. Mix mg and rocket and use flamers to keep AI flamers away from your structures.

3. When you do move out, consolidate strong points and try to create killing fields. Don't attack AI bases until you control the approaches and supply routes.

Remember that while the AI always attacks the nearest enemy unit, it assaults the weakest base. (It assesses the latter by the amount of damage it inflicts.) So a strong defence will persuade the AI to attack elsewhare, thus giving you time to build up your forces.

Persevere. WZ is not a complicated game, you just have to get down and concentrate all the time. But once you begin to master it you will find WZ a pure pleasure to play.

Thank you, I've been getting better strategy-wise, and I realized that flamers are effective against all the tanks, as well as lots and lots of mortars. Those are my favorite. I don't attack the enemy bases until I've got VTOL's, because they're a lot easier and/or faster than making a bunch of tanks. I do enjoy the game alot more now that I last more than five minutes. Again, thanks a lot.

Hey there. I'm pretty new here as well, and have only recently decided to download this game and play it again. I've played Warzone 2100 before on the Playstation, but I lost my copy of the game. (I was pretty much a noob back then anyways, who probably relied a little too much on machineguns to carry me through, but after much trial-and-error, I managed to somehow beat the game on easy difficulty. :P ) However, I've sinced played a few other rts games, including the Command & Conquer series, and Starcraft 2, and have since gotten much better at rts games in general, including this game.

In my first few skirmish matches against the computer AI since replaying this game again, I initially tried to expand to oil derricks as early as possible, while researching mini-rocket pods (and towers) and machinegun bunkers as early as I can to deal with any potential early-game rushes by the opponent using machinegun tanks or trucks. Afterwards, while I was placing pressure on my opponent with a mixed force of Mini-Rocket Pod Viper Wheels and cyborg flamers, I would focus on researching mostly upgrades to power and research (I was mostly hoping on winning through a better economy), as well as going for hover propulsion (I preferred speed over armor so that my forces can more quickly flee from unfavorable encounters) and upgrades for both flamers and rockets.

Lately, however, I've started changing up my preferred early-game strategies. While I'm still focusing mostly on winning through a superior economy (meaning that I'm still securing oil derricks early and focusing mainly on researching power and research upgrades), I'm now thinking about researching machinegun towers as early as possible before going for machinegun bunkers (since it was taking me too long to research machinegun bunkers or mini-rocket-towers), then going for a mix between cannon cyborgs and tanks, flamer cyborgs, and grenadiers and mortar tanks so that I could quickly tech up to a formidable early-game balanced force that is well-suited to taking on pretty much any foe. (I'm still focusing mainly on speed over armor though.) For the early game, I'm also thinking about building 1 or 2 machinegun tanks to deal with so-called truck rushes against my base or derricks while my own trucks are busy. To keep enemy flamers away from my bunkers, I'm even considering placing tank traps in front of my bunkers so that the flamers couldn't get within range of my bunkers, while my bunkers could safely attack those flamers from further away, behind the safety of the tank traps.

Also, lately, I seem to be taking a liking to using commanders to lead groups of my forces not only because units assigned to them are treated as if their experience level was 1 or more levels higher than normal, but also because they tended to reduce the amount of micromanagement that's needed to control my forces (since units attached to a commander would automatically retreat for repairs, and then return to the commander's side after repairs are complete, and since units produced from factories that are assigned to a commander are automatically assigned to that particular commander). On top of that, command turrets could also spot for artillery units and structures, and provided a lot of HP so that they aren't as easy to destroy as other units.

By the way, I'm thinking about wanting to try playing some online multiplayer matches later on, and I might be interested in a match or 2 with you :D , though 1st, I think I'll need to practice on playing skirmishes on normal speed, since I seem to have this habit of wanting to play the game as slowly as possible so that I can quickly react to situations that arise. :lol2:
