Hao
I thought you might be speaking about something different than 0 to 255
Now I will know
Speaking about Gimp, well I didnt know it was Gimp
I took a quick glance a long time ago
It was your speed map making
I am happy again that you consider the last map to be worthy
and fun
thank you also for explaining the reason of this opinion

The Magic Pond Map :)
Hello gentlemen
After a very long while I have made a 1 v 1 player map
my first one
and I am still alive
It is 100 x 50
the smalest I have ever made now
although big enough for 1 v 1 battle
It includes advanced bases
It is 6 oils in base
8 more per player on the map but 2 of this 8 have the Scavengers
I tried vary the terrarian as much as I can, it is also rich in textures and features
It is called Magic Pond becuse in some mysterious way water comes to it from two sides and disappears next to the magic ponds hill
or shall I say mysterious needle
It is the Scavengers who gather water from the desert in the pond
So dont be surprised by their presence there
Yes scavengers are available for this map
Have fun gentlemen

Re: Merowingg's Maps
Oh my (: (: (: Well, let's see what we have here.After a very long while I have made a 1 v 1 player mapmy first one
Well, the map is actually smaller than most of the duel maps around. The distance between bases is around 1:10 (measured in seconds a truck needs to go from one base to another); maps like Startup and Highground have ~1:30. This makes rushing a good choice.
14 oils per player is quite a lot, but fine. Still, capturing the center is essential.
The two ground chokepoints are rather narrow and rather easy to turtle-up, but when hovers come in, the game becomes much more crazy. Also, the hills and valleys you've placed around, combined with the targeting fix in 2.3.6, turn out to affect the early gameplay in a rather curious way: shooting to and from those hills is rather difficult. Also, harassing the base from the highground around it with direct-fire weapons isn't as easy as it might seem to be. Anyway, the terrain is really well-made.
Texturing seems to be imperfect, but since 3.0 is around, we don't care, do we? (: (: (:
A very nice rushy map

Hello Hao
I am delighted that finally someone, here I mean you Hao
Well speaking about the Magic Pond Map.. I made it small becuse I heard all the time the words of one of our friend gentleman that on a too big map players get bored and angry when they have to look for the enemy.. I am also amazed that I have made it so small too
I am not sure what you mean that the map has some texture imperfections.. I looked around the map and I dont see any.. I know that with 3.0 mapmaking word stand on its head, and I know it allowes to some level of mistakes which in fact will not be noticed.. but I am a perfectionist.. but to some extent of do not exaggerating
I do care in 3.0
Bye

The Octopus Map :)
Hello gentlemen
If someone would ask me how many times I can modify my Squared map
I would say.. unlimited number of times !
As a result we have something Squared like but not so Squared
I have again modified my Squared map
The map is 200 x 200
I have made the areas of exact bases few tiles smaller
to make building harder and thought through
The areas of the bases the passages to the centre and the centre are highly elevated
while the water level is far below
Each base has one main entrance and two side entrances to the water level
Also main square has eight entrances to the water level
All those entrances should make the game more interesting
I have added nice textures to the map so it is not pale
It is like original Squared in amount of oil per base so it is 24
Advanced bases are included
I have called it Octopus becuse on this water surface of it looks slike giant Octopus
I have made another Squared variation because I have good memories about Squared itself
as I said somewhere here before
I hope you will have fun on the map
Bye

What amazes me is how a mechanically produced ( Euclid & Corel Draw) map could lead to this absurd level of obsession...

You know that using those smiles or shall I say smileys is my style
why to repeat that there is too much of it
I know.. I am trying to fight with it but I am losing almost all the time
Let me try my skills when i will talk to zydonk
Hao
You know me even better so you gave up telling me not to smile to much

But gentlemen I will try to do my best

How dare you to accuse me of producing a/the map/s machenically, I see you know nothing, why you ask, let me explain, a good mapmaker, or mapplayer will notice or probaly have noticed that I do all my maps manually, I have never used Random Height Generator, at least yet.
I do not unfortunatelly know what Euclid is. I know what Corel Draw is, but it is unbelievably expensive here. So as I said all my maps are created manually, I see you must know a litle, a drop in mapmaking world, becuse you accuse of mechanization or even mass production of my maps.. Well such a tool like FlaMe 1.10 which I find excellent to work with is far more advanced than flame 1.2 on which i worked for about 6 months..
FlaMe 1.10 allows to create a map the simplest one in 3 minutes, bad in one hour, satisfactory over two hours, all depends on millions of factors. There are maps that you have to spend 10 or 20 or 30 hours with, but now the time is shortened amazingly. Yes using a map like Squared, allows to make 1/4 of it and then copy and paste to the remining rest, but !
making this 1/4 still needs time.. in case of Octopus it was about 5 hours, which prolongued to 7 including copying. I used old of my squared, yes, but only as a place pattern, all the rest is ruined, and varied, but you must have noticed that, yes you did, didnt you ? The height, the base size and finally its corners in some places and of course multiple entrances. Also copying and making the right part to copy is tricky.
I see you have done a lot of maps and know a lot that you can call a map like Octopus mechanically produced.
I see sentence about a map leading to a level of obsession.. here i smiled to myself, well.. listen really carefully, mapmaking is my kingdom and at least temporarily, the hobby, the thing that gives me a lot of pleasure and satisfaction, and the truth is if i want I will make another 15 versions of Squared, especially that some extreme versions are very popular, which you have probaly noticed too. I will make them becuse I am free of ideas, and full of ideas and as you probaly read above, I have good memeories about the Squared map, maybe this is to ambiguous sentence, so I wil explain, I mean by that that I have made great friend on original squared, I learned how to play on it, and I had unforgettable battles on it in the past. I made my pattern I will continue.
If you want to, if you can, make your maps, I will even make a psychological portrait from it. But do not judge by appearance, try to calm down your anger which to be honest I do not understand, maybe jelaousity ? If you need type as you do at my mapmaker friends posts, some deep notes, I remember some, but here try to expres value of created work, based on some respected facts, not emotions as I can clearly see, I remember once here was one post removed from my thread, allso full of anger, was that you.
And If you see a map and tell that it is mechanically produced, then think for a while how much effort someone must have made to do it, it is sometimes more sometimes less, or respect the Idea, do you have Ideas ?

Re: Merowingg's Maps
.
Merowingg I think you may have miss-read zydonk's post.
zydonk created the original squared map years ago - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2259 - and was speaking to HIS experience as the creator and also that he is surprised, basically, that others would be so interested in the map as to continuously make variants of it.
If I have miss-read zydonk's post he will correct me and speak for himself, I have no doubt.
BTW - I posted in detail as whipper my thoughts on squared in the original thread so I won't add but 1 one thing. I think it's a good thing if peeps make whatever they enjoy making, however they enjoy making it. Same goes for the various styles of playing the game. I too have my preferences in both creation and playing which tend to go against the prevailing current but I do not think it of any value to publically judge the differences, for better or worse. Follow your muse as a creator and, as a player, find those who are like-minded in what they enjoy. This last is far from easy at this time but hopefully a new Lobby (like the one Member Terminator is creating) will make a world of difference in improving the current MP goings-on.
Lastly -
However, since I have a special fondness for Euclid going back to grade school I'll add a wee bit of bio.
Greek mathematician who lived a couple millenia past and created what is called Plain Geometry or more commonly known as Euclidian Geometry and is sometimes called the "Father of Geometry". After I fell under Euclid's spell as a child I thought I wanted to become a mathematician when I grew-up. Things didn't work out that way after I came across Russell & Whitehead's "Principia Mathematica" (& Kurt Godel's work at the same time) but I still have a special feeling for Euclid. Enough bio.

First of all
Hello Rman Virgil
I am really happy to see you here on my thread
I tried to type to you in private few times to say hello and ask how are you doing but I see you have locked PM messages, may I know why ?? How to contact with you ?? Well look at this long mapmaking history of mine
You typed to me here at the very beginning, I hope you were not sarcastic then.. but you were one of people who made me believe that my maps are not so bad and I believed in myself and this is how it all started.. Maybe also becuse the player called Mattbrit learned me everything about the game and it was he who sent me my first mapmaking program and learned all he knewed step by step, it was he who told me that the post from you is great to hear and that you are familiar with the game for many years and that you make the maps for many years too..
Well.. maybe I overreacted too.. I felt offended.. and some feelings might have gone through me too..
If zydonk created the original squared abd I see he did I owe him a lot, I can say both the game and mapmaking inspirations,
game - becuse one of my first maps I played was Squared, and it was on Squared that Mattbrit played with me and this is how we became friends
mapmaking inspirations - I think this is obvious
Of course I know that both you and I cannot tell what zydont ment, but really thank you for turning my attention to your point of view of this fact..
Sorry zydonk if I over reacted and offended you somehow, I am not native english speaker, I can interpret differently, but I still dont know what you ment exactly..
Rman Virgil thank you for your words here
Can you please publicly or in private say something about my creations ?? but honestly..
Please also if you can and are willing to give me any contact to you so I could ask, exchange and give ideas, or just say hello from time to time
If no I will understand
Thank you
Bye

Howdy Merowingg.
Yea... I had to disable PMs across all the net communities I participate in for a few months to stay tightly focused on a couple RL music/art/theater/film projects that were very intense for me.... but I have re-enabled PM's in a couple communties, including here, so fire away.
No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I saw a lot of honest passion, potential, imagination and spirited commitment in your efforts - all of which I respect and appreciate for the rare creative qualities that they are.
Yea, I am an old timer dinosaur when it comes to WZ - all the way back to beta-testing the game before it was even released retail in April '99 and involved ever since in more ways than I'll speak too here. So while I do know a lot, I still am learning new WZ stuff all the time, believe it or not, from all quarters (including you) and that's one of the reasons the game and the community still fascinate me to the point of activity, in one form or another.
As far as commenting more here....
Well, truth be told, I have a lot of biases which I freely express in my own project threads but which I am very leery of expressing in other peeps threads because I think they can too readily be miss-understood as passing absolute artistic judgments on an others work which is not in me to do cause I do not believe in it. I believe peeps should find their own way artistically and the only way I care to cross paths is to share my work for what ever it's worth inspiration-wise or to make fairly simple, un-judgmental suggestions (at their behest) that peeps can take or leave as they see fit.
You got it bud. We can pick-up on our PMs again.

The ScavHell Map :)
Hello Gentlemen
Have you ever seen Scavengers on Squared ??
no ?? now you can
The Scav Hell map is as you can see Squared but for 4 people
the 4 remaining bases are entirely filled with scavengers
even the centre is taken by them
To deal with them is real.. hell
The most important thing to tell is that each player have 8 oils in base, while the Scavengers have 16 per each base, I count with centre
4 times x 16
counting with oil of 5th base in centre
I had also put nice textures on the map to make it more interesting
I exaggerated with the amount of the Scavengers structures and I had to reduce it..
but it is almost the maximum
almost 255
be scared
Have fun gentlemen
