very basic editing-modify existing weapon

hi folks,
i'd like to edit the assault cannon paramenters ( ROF and Damage, i think).
I've done similar tweaks on other games before , but i'm at the moment stuck with WZ.
Which are the steps?
I guess I need some txt editor for WZ file first- then locate the stats i want- then edit them like I did with, say , Warhammer or Ghost recon- and it should be all. Right?

Weapons.txt is located in /data/base/stats

The only thing left to know is the ID of the assault cannon

What do you have to do if you want to add a weapon, body or propulsion?
I've been trying many times, I've searched on the forum and on google, but I haven't found anything.
