Also, this may be a little more difficult to do, but how about the ability to "lock" on to a certain tech on the tech tree (if it gets implemented) and make it so that the game GUI highlights the research icons needed to reach that tech from within the research menu?
Failing that, just highlighting the unresearched techs available to you on the path to whatever tech you want from within the tech tree would be great.
Is it possible to implement an ingame tech tree?
