Im kinda new to the game and i was wondering what are the point of missle silos?

I suppose you talking about campaign ? if yes, its just a part of the plot.

In latest Nexus missions it is quite the opposite: You lose the game if they get destroyed.

You need to research missile acces codes and defend the silos from Nexus attacks in order to destroy LasSats...

For the campaign, the silos are used to desroy the NASDA laser satilites which are misfiring in 'your general direction', in NTW they're used as a superweapon, the rival to the satilite uplink, but other than that, they're just scenery.
"Raven, where will you go? What will you do?"
