Problem Hosting Multiplayer Game

Post by Firechkn34 »

So i am having a problem in Hosting multiplayer games. I used to play on my desktop and i worked fine on that, but i recently got a laptop and now i can't host games.I know, i should look at the FAQ's, and i did. That was how i fixed the problem on my desktop. It keeps saying "Error while connection with lobby server: connection timed out" I had the problem before i and i fixed it on my desktop by using the port forwarding thing. I am using the same ISP, same router, same cable modem, every thing is the same except for the computer. I know it isn't my connection because i can join and play games fine, just not host them.

I used that canyouseeme website thing on both computers and it show that neither computer can be shown at the 2100 port, yet the desktop can host and the laptop can't. Any suggestions?

You'll have to add in another port forwarding rule for your laptop, since it uses a different local IP than your desktop.

There's a workaround actually. Set your laptop to use the same IP address as your desktop.

...unfortunately, this means only one of them can host at a time, since two computers using the same IP = IP address conflict. :hmm:

Have you considered resetting the router? :?

Resetting the router is a last resort. And can they both access the internet at the same time if I change the address of the laptop?

Nope. If your laptop and desktop have the same IP, only one of them can be connected to your router (and thus the Internet) at a time.

Unless you have UPnP, only one of your laptop or desktop will be able to host.

This, by the way, is one of the things IPv6 is supposed to fix.

Yes (the desktop, if configured with DHCP, should just get a new address), but only the laptop will be able to host.

EDIT: Wow, I have a slow connection, two posts were made as I was writing this one. :stare:

Here's what you should do:
  • Disconnect your desktop from the network
  • Assign your laptop the address normally used by your desktop via static IP
  • Reconnect your desktop
The laptop should now have the desktop's former address and your desktop should have a new one.

Hmm... tell the desktop to reconnect to the network (or just reboot it). Then it should pull a new address over DHCP.

If that doesn't work give the desktop a new address manually. :P

Just pick a random IP address? I'm not much of a network guy so you will have to be a little more specific.

Pretty much. So if your laptop happens to be "192.168.1.2," give your desktop "192.168.1.5" or something. Be sure to use the same subnet, gateway, and DNS.
