Re: SUPER UNITS
That were exactly the USS Macon and it's predecessor, the USS Akron. But that was way prior to WW2. The Airship program was canceled in 1935 after the USS Macon crash-landed at sea with nearly all hands lost. These ships were intended for long-range patrol duty over the Pacific and for this purpose, and for self-defense, could launch and recover four F9C Sparrowhawk. As a side-note, they were not bimps but Zeppelin airships. Though they were by no means fortresses. Unarmored, unarmed, slow and fragile would be a better description. Warzone 2100 has no need for such a unit, as we don't have maps large enough for long-range patrol flights of several weeks. Any aerial patrol duty can be pursued by VTOLs.Assault Gunner wrote:There have been incidents of actual flying fortresses (Sort of). During WWII, the US Navy had a blimp program, and the blimps were capable of launching and retrieving specially fitted aircraft. If we wanted to, we could probably make an flying base, though it would be fairly small, and not at all worth the money. Still, if I were developing tech in WZ2100, I would use the Transport as a basis for a flying VTOL repair and resupply unit.

Hey, I was just pointing out that airbases are possible. And yeah, sorry about the dates, my bad. But as to the point of a mobile VTOL platform: It allows drastically increased strike frequency, if you use all your Vtols in strikes on single, tough targets(like me). I tend to go for the factories, the power plants, or the defenses. But, to be honest, usually VTOLs dont finish the job. They end the enemby arty, kill their forts, and that's it. After that, I assign them to a VTOL strike turret.

Re: SUPER UNITS
i usually make about ten to twenty vtols as well as an equall or larger amount of landing pads and then repeatedly bomb the enemy in this order: AA guns, builder units, factories, and then anti land unit guns. after that its simple to just send in one or too tanks to finish the job.

Re: SUPER UNITS
^^ So what's the point in having a mobile VTOL rearming pad, then? The current ones seen to work fine...

Nice idea, but better suited for Warzone5100 maybe?

Re: SUPER UNITS
i dunno, ive always been a fan of decentralized combat, i hated the enemy knowing where my base was going to be, so id build outposts all over big maps, each one equipped to become a main in an instant. mobile vtol pads would be the epitome of that.

Re: SUPER UNITS
Well, in that case Mobile Pads would work best for you. But VTOLs pads aren't too hard to rebuild, right?

Re: SUPER UNITS
IMHO, the only thing that would really be a bit too advanced for WZ2100 is mobile bases.

But HQs - NO. It exists now - why not 90 years from now ?

Yeah- plus, HQ is required to research defensive tech, so what happens if that requirement is removed? I sense more MG tower spammers over MP.Rman Virgil wrote:But HQs - NO. It exists now - why not 90 years from now ?

Re: SUPER UNITS
i'm guessing there's some other thread going on for the warzone 5100 right?
and the point of a mobile vtol pad is that my heavy slow bombers dont have to fly across the map to get refueled because that takes a very long time. the whole point of having aerial units is to conduct swift hit and run attacks from, if you will, the closest and most well equipped base. now, we have already utilized Aircraft carriers in real life to basically increase the range and attack speed of our air force. in 90 years it is quite realistic that we would have an advanced form of carrier.

Re: SUPER UNITS
Your heavy slow bombers? A HEAP bomb bay Panther VTOL, provided you research fuel injection engine MK3, has a speed of 700 and enough armor to withstand anything as long as it's set to retreat at medium damage. Once you took out the enemy air defense, a squadron of six of these can take out two factories and three or four defenses in a single run. Or three research facilities and a cyborg factory or two cyborg factories, a factory and a power generator. Or a dozen field units. If you place your rearming pads well, your VTOLs won't even have to cross the map to do an attack run. To double attack frequency, you can always field two squadrons. Don't tell VTOL raids are underpowered, cause they ain't. If you're not using them to their best efficiency, that's not due to the game. It doesn't take flying VTOL pads to to so.
