Improving the tutorial

Post by mrvn »

Hi,

I've played warzone2100 for barely a week so I have a verry newbee perspective on things. As such I found that the tutorial is severly limited and could teach more usefull things:

1) Build oil refinery near a scavenger base and assign a number of units to guard it.
2) Research gun turret and build a line of them to protect the refinery. Teach that you can build more than one turret in a go.
3) Teach about the Alt to switch between roles (where available).
4) Teach about selecting with Ctrl to select units that are assigned.
5) Build sensor unit, (re)assign units to it and eradicate the scavenger base.

Some verry nice things there. Thanks.

A major improvment is shown in "Two ncie things...". Seems like now one can queue up things to build using shift. That is a majorly usefull thing.

I bet someone would improve the tutorial if they had the time, everyone on the Project Staff here is a volunteer. And they already have a lot of other important work on their hands.

Does anyone have any idea on how the tutorial can be made? I'm talking about the technicalities here.

Probably the biggest problem with changing the tutorial are the spoken explanations. I guess an updated tutorial would be text only, especially if it gets updated often to include new features.

But apart from that, it shouldn't be that difficult, have a look at http://developer.wz2100.net/browser/bra ... orial3.vlo, http://developer.wz2100.net/browser/bra ... orial3.slo and http://developer.wz2100.net/browser/bra ... f/tutorial, I think those are the main files.

scripting. you will need to look at the specific items that are involved with that scenario.

A text-only tutorial without voices can be good enough, IMO.

Thanks for that info. Now there is just one more requirement. What needs to go into the tutorial? This would require a lot of planning. The mentioned changes by mrvn are a start.

Text only is perfectly fine for a start. Then when the new tutorial is tested, refined and the wording all polished it shouldn't be too hard to sample someone reading the texts and add some more sound samples, right?

Yes, the voicing can be added later. Have you browsed through the scripting and data files posted by cybersphinx?

How about using text-to-speech synthesizers to generate the voice recording? For example "festival" on the Linux platform, or any other useful tool? I admit they do sound more robot-like, but hey, something's better than nothing, right? :hmm:

I don't mind voice narrating if no one has a problem. I just need a script and I'll say it.
