Challenge 2 (Hide behind me) help

I consider myself a veteran of Warzone 2100 because I've had forever, but I haven't played online much (don't really intend to :-p ) and i've decided to try the challenges you guys have made. First challenge was no contest. The second challenge, however, Hide Behind Me is beyond my ability at present.

Help?

I've tried a varying number of strategies. I've tried to fast-tech HVCs and got dismantled by VTOLs as my allies died to cyborgs. I've tried fast teching to VTOLs and by the time I got a squadron of 5 up with phosphorus bombs, both my allies were collapsing and I didn't have any defense of my own. My most successful strategy, which went light on research, was a 4 factory cyborg rush. I actually killed one of the enemy AIs but when I pushed onto the second he had HPVs and howitzers... and was far too far ahead of me technologically for my cyborgs to damage him. My most recent effort was me just trying to just spam vehicles with cannons. I got wasted by VTOLs and Anti-tank rockets.

How can this be won? Seriously, this challenge is kicking my ass.

I usually got 2 factories + 3 research centers. I've used as many as 5 research centers but I ran out of money far too quickly. Even still, it seems like I cannot keep up with the enemy technology. I've barely got medium cannons when hover python HPVs come rolling through my base.

Suggestions?

When your allies are defeated, chances for survival are almost none.
So, keep them alive at all costs.

I'm half tempted to leave them to die... Whenever I make progress against an enemy or the enemy destroys a few of my derricks my allies are quick to sieze them. I lost derricks in my main base to VTOL strikes and they stole those too.
