Anyone think this is a good idea? or maybe it doesn't fit with the fast pace of wz?

Single Use Units
This was featured in "Real War" in the form of cruise missiles and uhh.... Earth 2150 in the form of ballastic missiles, C&C as those nuclear bomb truck things.
Anyone think this is a good idea? or maybe it doesn't fit with the fast pace of wz?

Re: Single Use Units
Hi comanighttrain, Welcome to WZ2100 forum..
I'm sorry, but it's been a long long time since I've played any of those games. Care to elaborate more on the idea?

It is a good idea, and it is possible with some scripting.

Re: Single Use Units
thanks for welcome
It may be a "new paradigm" for this game as no units exist with this behaviour...
basically, a one use unit generally self destructs to cause damage - easiest example is the truck bomb. It moves to minimal distance to its target and detonates. The unit is lost but the pay off is generally massive and/or splash
In the example of a cruise missile (forgetting air launch for the moment) or a ballastic missile (could be a tactical nuke), it gets launched from its silo and flies to the target or target area and then destructs, again for the splash or mass damage. In this example the unit can also be safely defeated by air defense.
another game example is warcraft, the exploding goblins?

Ok, I think I get it now, that's an interesting idea there. The self-destructive unit would need just about enough armor to reach close enough to do some real damage because, in my opinion, everyone builds very tough defenses to prevent anything from getting through easily.

Re: Single Use Units
It's possible to make a mod that makes units like that. There was a mod for 1.10 that replaced Plasmite Flamer with a "Supernova" weapon that was like that.
I can't really fit suicide units into Warzone's current balance model, but it's not impossible to implement as a mod. Here, let me try something.
This mod replaces Thermite Flamer Cyborg with a suicide weapon.

Re: Single Use Units
Star Trek Armada 2 had the Phoenix-class ship and Starcraft 2 is to have the Baneling. Warzone 2100 has the flamer cyborg for this. At least, in terms of the unit not surviving when attacking and inflicting massive amounts of damage. With moderate splash, as they tend to incinerate more than one enemy unit. And as far as a structure-launched infinite-range splash attack is concerned, WZ has the laser satellite. What's the point in adding another? I can't see an advantage with a cruise missile over the laser satellite. If it was to be that a cruise missile could be shot down by AAA, well, it would be shot down ten out of ten times, rendering such a technology useless.

Just a suggestion Zarel, why not post that Mod in the Add-ons section? This thread is going to get buried in the archives once it gets old, and then the mod would be such a waste, correct me if I am wrong here.Zarel wrote:It's possible to make a mod that makes units like that. IMO, AAA aren't designed to destroy cruise missiles. I thought it took an Anti-Cruise Missile to take down one of those.Corporal Punishment wrote: If it was to be that a cruise missile could be shot down by AAA, well, it would be shot down ten out of ten times, rendering such a technology useless.

No, once it's on the radar, AAA can take down a cruise missile. German Gepard AA-tank crews practice this every year on Crete. SAMs might be a different matter, as their maneuverability could be insufficient. But I wasn't thinking about reality, WZ AAA has a tendency of being ignorant towards the target when calculating hit ratio.

Re: Single Use Units
It's a proof-of-concept mod - it's playable, but it's still missing some name changes, artwork, and a bit more balancing (I tested it a bit and it was playable, but some fine-tuned balancing could still be helpful).j0shdrunk0nwar wrote:Just a suggestion Zarel, why not post that Mod in the Add-ons section? Plus, it's gotten zero downloads so far, so it can't be that much of a waste.

You can ofcourse take on a salvo strategy to try to beat base defense, like nato would in the event of a strategic war with russia (russia has a missile defence system, nato would beat it by overloading it with lots of targets...

Also a ballistic (as opposed to terrain hugging) missile can circumvent a lot of defenses...
Anyhoo, you guys can slug it out, see if it seems worth while doing
