Centralised location for all mod projects ?

Post by Buginator »

For all you mod authors (be it gfx, sound, AI, music, whatever), I was thinking that all this stuff should be located at one central location.
That way, we can see the progress on what has been done, and what people are working on, and, make it a lot easier for the devs to test the newer stuff out.

This would mean:
  • That you would always have a backup (via svn) of all your work.
  • Everyone will have instant access for testing.
  • Allow people to know what needs to be done.
  • Easier to keep track of permissions (license).
  • Vastly simplify how we can package all these mods in a bundle / via installer.
This would mean that each mod team would get their own branch to work with.

Does this sound like a good plan ?

Note, if you don't want to use svn, that is OK, I (or another dev) can do it for you.

This would most likely be hosted on SourceForge, and NOT on this server.

BTW, this thread isn't meant for non mod authors to reply, unless you think I missed something. :|
and it ends here.

Agree. This should be done a long time ago. But people can't test some things that we're working on right now like normal map, specular textures because engine doesn't support it. I hope it'll support in a future. If we will post a new models with only a diffuse textures it will look strange in game. Anyway, if we will post all types of textures it will be useful for a future development.

Also, nothing among the models, textures, etc. will not be lost due to server crash. :)

As for terrain textures that I made, they can't be tested correctly in game because I changed a code a bit to use more textures than the current trunk version use. I think I need to create a ticket where I can upload the patch and textures for testing. :?

Best regards.

Don't we already have a Mapping/Modding forum? Are we suggesting adding a dedicated "Established Mod Projects" subforum or something.

That would be better then, IMO.

The missing keyword is "repository".

Even if my mod is already on svn I think it is worth to tell my opinion: I think svn is good idea but we should also keep the "showcase" opened, modders who do not have a webpage to present their mod-projects need the showcase to communicate with the WZ community.
My Warzone 2100 mods:
Download DyDo-AI for Warzone skirmish/multiplayer games.
Download A2C-HM (Alpha 2 Campaign - Hard Mode).
Download A3C-HM (Alpha 3 Campaign - Hard Mode).

wtf Buggy, a global announcement for something only modders care about? We have a forum called "Mapping/Modding" for good reason.

You really need to look at the details a bit more. :stare:

This applies to "For all you mod authors (be it gfx, sound, AI, music, whatever)"
It isn't just for the people in the 'modders' section... and since you can't apply to the 3 forum sections that I was aiming this message to, it will be on all of them for a couple weeks.

Music / maps are usually in showcase.
other programs (flaME is in mapping/modders)
Art stuff is in the art section
(AI) scripting stuff is in the scripting section...

Yes, that will still be open... I am just making a collection of everything in one place, so nothing gets lost.

Won't non-modders be able to download the lastest greatest version of there favourite mod if its svn?
It is for everyone well that was my first impression.

Ok, locking thread, and putting all the details together, will make a new topic when it is all done. :3
and it ends here.
