New music - 'Reconnaissance'
Took another shot at making some original soundtrack music. I've tried to capture the early stages of a campaign/skirmish in this track - maybe for my next effort, I'll try & put something together that would suit the full-on firefights better.
You can listen quickly on SoundCloud - http://soundcloud.com/hairylee/reconnaissance - or if you want a .ogg or .mp3, let me know and I'd be happy to send one to you.
Would really appreciate any feedback you have & will knock up another version later on depending on what you guys have to say!
EDIT: Here's a link to a .ogg of the current version:

Re: New music - 'Reconnaissance'
it's nice towards the beginning however you can hear the same repeating phrase in the middle.

Re: New music - 'Reconnaissance'
Thanks for listening, macuser - yeah, just to listen to on it's own it is pretty repetitive.
I was aiming to keep it minimal & didn't want it to chop and change too much - do you have any suggestions on how I could fix the middle a bit?

Perhaps lengthen the repeating area:
|beginning-------| |segment--| |segment--| |segment--| VS.
|Beginning-------| |segment------------| |segment------------| etc
also try switching up the instruments occasionally - fade in one fade out the next like in the beginning when the beat is introduced

Man, that's great! Remembers me of the original soundtrack.HairyLee wrote:Thanks man, will try that out in the next draft!

Hmm, maybe I should have a go at music. I have some nice ideas but I don't know how to describe them.
About the theme - you hit the spot, definetely. I'd have more percussion, though
In addition, I'd make a more distinct, different chorus, and alternate in with the curent "ta-dadadadadada-tadadada-tadadadada-tadadada", which sounds a bit boring, if the listener pays due attention to the music. Not a great problem in background music, definetely.
You could also add something like the beginning of this music: Weapons of Mass Distortion - Crystal Method (Legion of Boom). It sounds real good.
You've got a talent there! Please keep sharing it with us.

Re: New music - 'Reconnaissance'
Thanks Olrox! If your music is anywhere near as good as your art, I can't wait to hear it! If you're too busy to make music yourself & have any ideas that you can describe, let me know & I can try and base something around them.
Listening to this song again, I think your idea of alternating the 'ta-dadadadadadadada' bit with something else would definitely improve it. I've got a couple of ideas floating around so will see what I can do! Will also throw some more percussion/effects in there
Got my dissertation due in soon and finals this month, so could be a few weeks before the next one surfaces.
Thanks again for the feedback guys!
Any more comments before I get working on this again would be awesome

It's great! I would love an ".ogg" of it.
You wrote: "I was going for a 'machines venturing into the unknown' feel.", and: "I've tried to capture the early stages of a campaign/skirmish in this track." Well, in both there are some moments in what something big and exciting happens. So the best inprovement, by me, would be short energic bursts of very fast and loud music.
Example:
|Start|-|Burst|-|The theme, starting loud like the burst, then slowly fading out until ~30% faded|-|Burst|-|Theme|-...-|End|
Get it?

Re: New music - 'Reconnaissance'
Thanks for the positive feedback KukY! If you still want a .ogg, mesage me your email address & i'll send you one
Alternatively, does anyone know of any decent, free & popup-free places I can host files? This would probably be easier & better for when I have more tracks to put up later.
These are all good suggestions - I might be able to create some 'bursts' by gradually fading some parts out & just when it gets quiet, hit hard with some extra percussion like Olrox suggested. From what you guys have said, I think I can do some interesting things with this track!

You should upload it to MediaFire or FileDropper, and post links here.
