Subsections of "About" (for instance) should always be visible when you're looking at the "About" page.

You have a UI idea that accommodates that?

Yep.

...using layout 3, the text labels could be replaced with named buttons representing the subsections of the page you're at. When you position the cursor over another button, this vanishes and other buttons are slightly greyed, opening the horizontal menu (with the same height of the selected button, of course), with the subsections of that page. When the cursor isn't positioned over any button, the subsections of the current page are displayed again, in the same way the section name labels currently are.

Yeah, thank you for that champ... but my idea was pointing to make the #3 idea look like that. I wasn't talking about taking that image and make it the new website header but... whatever ;)
Maybe I should remove my location o_O

I don't entirely understand (but it sounds cluttery and confusing). Can you sketch that?

I know; I was joking. My point was that since your idea wasn't actually making that the new website header, you'd have to be more specific about what you wanted. And that's still not specific enough - how am I supposed to make the #3 idea look like that?

Sure, I'm opening PS right now to make Jorzi's signature, I'll have a go at it.

Ok, here is what I meant, in a sketchy way:
header proposi.png
"1" is the starting layout, cursor isn't over anything, it's in the home page.
"2" is mouse over section, no clicks, subsections are shown as buttons. Clicking in the icon will lead to the Section page, clicking on the Subsection button will lead to the specific subsection. Moving the cursor off the menu will return to 1.
"3" is displayed in the Section and Subsection pages. Moving the mouse over other icons will lead to position 2, with the exception of clicking at "home" will lead to position 1 again.

Looks nice. :-)
I'm not sure if that graying is a must have, but all of it is doable and enough user friendly.

No, I don't think that's user friendly enough... and it looks kind of ugly. :/

It's "simple" on hover / click menu, only location of triggers is more advanced.
And how it will look depends on how it will be implemented, this is only simple sketch. ;-)
Maybe users should decide / give feedback in poll?

No, feel free to comment on my sketches. That's like most of the point of this thread.

I'm just saying, the system you're proposing could be kind of confusing and cluttery, which makes it kind of not worth the effort.

The FAQ is something I seek often for. Well, I'm not representive but I guess having a prominent FAQ link/tab doesn't hurt. Last but not least for the generation Twitter, which is unable to read text with more than 140 chars.

Oh, and about the hover navigation: Well, it might look nice, but it has in 99% of all usages huge flaws as soon as you don't have an exact pointing device. For example a touchscreen/pad or smartphone or keyboard navigation.

New header is under development at:

http://addons.wz2100.net/

This is currently NOT DONE YET. In fact, it looks terrible. So suggestions to fix it would be nice.

Yes, I'm planning on adding icons to the tabs, so you don't need to mention that. :P

Current background looks better than screenshot, for sure.
Size change on hover is distracting, maybe better change font color only?
That floating download button will be changed to kind of icon or moved somewhere?

The screenshot background would may look better, if it would be HQ (at least 1080px width + FSAA + AAF) and then maybe run trough some kind of paint filter, to wash out some details and make it less distracting.
