Another option is to add them into .pot file and translate like ordinary strings. Then use script to put them into .desktop file (maybe should be run using cron, along with script to automatically update .pot and .po files, for example once per day). I think that KDE uses this or similar method so script might be already done and lie somewhere in their SVN repository.
